Let's try this again: best bang under $10K
« on: November 29, 2004, 11:58:47 pm »
The other thread went off topic, so I'm starting a new one. Let's all play a game: "find a second car for dip".

Requirements: 4 doors, good torque (180..200+ lbs), manual, not boring, unique, nice interior, under $10000 on the road. I don't mind doing some maintenance if needed. The car will have to live through the winter with honours and prove mod-worthy when the sunny months come.

I can promise not to spend too much time on making the decision (unlike certain individuals), and report back in the nearest couple of weeks. The best advice (or a guess) could perhaps get a prize.

May the best troll win.

Can we find a '93 Celica All-trac in the budget?  AWD for the winter.  Turbo for modding later.  And a Toyota to leave you feeling like it's a sound purchase.

By the way... I caught that decision-making dig.  :-)

Two words for you about the Celica: "two doors". There are so many attractive coupes on the market, but it's such a pain to pull a little kid from the back seat of a coupe ;(

But thanks for a reminder, I have completely forgotten about this breed of Celicas.

1997-1998 Audi A4 1.8T
1995-1999 Nissan Maxima
1994-1996 BMW 5 series

Since the above models are quite common...you could consider this:

I think he meant that $10k will be your maintenance cost.

You can find a reasonable E36 BMW 325 for around $10K, but don't expect low km's or end of the model run.

a Maxima would be better value, but the drive wheels are all wrong for something "fun."

Good luck
No place I'd rather be...

Dip, knowing, driving and assuming you like your Saab, I would suggest possibly a Saab 9000 or 900 for you.  Especially since maintenance costs is not a huge issue. Lots of room and the hatch provides good versatility to haul your stuff.

Also a Volvo 850 turbo 5 would be sweet.

Thanks for the suggestions folks.

- Jetta -- I'll pass.
- Maxima -- owned one already, would rather try something else.
- The Swedes are on the list, naturally, but that's an obvious choice. Bullit, can't you get a S70 T5 for this kind of money?
- Got to go test drive the Germans now...

It's interesting how the suggestions are different from the other thread. Nobody's offering the sensible cars ;)

At the risk of sounding like a broken record I will chime in again with my all time low bucks favourite:

1999 Ford Contour SVT. A sweet sounding (quasi-dual exhaust) 2.5L V6 making 200HP. A good 5 speed (not the best shift feel but far from the worst), sticky v-rated tires (better have a winter set) and room for 4 adults. Also has leather, power seats, sunroof. This car is reasonably quick in a straight line (i think 0-60 in the low 7's) but stoplight racing is not its forte. This car really shines in the curves. I just drove my buddy's 2004 6sp Maxima and there is no comparision. I didn't realize how good the Contour handled until I tried a few others. Too bad Ford didn't have much in the way of build quality on this model. The engine / driveline / brakes were solid though. I sold my 99 with 50k km for 13 500. I am currently looking at another 99 with 58k km for $10500. A very entertaining $10 000 car.

Sorry Dip, I meant the 850 T5 could probably be had for this money and probably a base S70 could be had for this money. I doubt that you can find an S70 T5 under 10 grand.

I seem to recall you pondering between a V70 and your current 9-5 a long time ago. Is a V70 or the 850 equivilant out of the question?

OK OK OK.... all I see are cars that's being suggested with reliability not in consideration. Other than Jamesbe very level-headed suggestion of a civic. then a 180 degrees turn for a Taurus SHO. LOL!
Why not an early 90s Miata?

Why not an early 90s Miata?

Well, it meets none of the criteria, but so what?  I have thought about a Miata and going nuts on it.  Nothing like a stock-looking pre 99 Miata with gobs of power to kick some ass.
