Best bang for the buck cars in the $8K-$12K range
« on: November 28, 2004, 11:16:44 pm »
Just want to start researching on what sporty, reliable cars I should consider in the $8K to $12K  range....looking for best bang for the buck and mid 90's or newer...prefer automatic and some luxury options. Was considering a Mazda Millenia, but found too many poor reliability reviews. Nissan Maxima? Accord or Camry might be also considered....prefer the performance oriented models though. Thanks in advance.

Since you're considering a Camry, you might as well take a look at the Toyota Avalon. The Acura Legend/RL are great cars (RL is not very sporty though). I think Infiniti's G20 or maybe the I30 should also be considered.

A Buick Regal with the 3.8 engine or any model GM with the 3.8 engine would serve you very well.

I'd be considering an Acura Integra sedan.  Very sporty ride and great reliability.

Some of the later model Ford Focuses (Foci?)look and drive pretty sweet.  ZX3 package is pretty cool.  Coupled with rapid depreciation you might be able to grab a fairly new one.  By most account quality issues have been largely solved in the last couple 'o three years.

Are you looking for a 4dr?  A coupe?  I'm assuming a sporty 4 door sedan.

Yes, a four door sedan that is a bit luxury and somewhat sporty, 0-100kph performance under 8-8.5 second preferred with an automatic. A late 90's Mazda Millenia S looked ideal...210 hp, 210 ft*lbs, supercharger, near luxury feature but I have seen too many poor reliability comments to pursue it any further.

Won't be buying until spring or summer at the earliest.

Shnak...Barrie.  Go to opposite corners and stare at the wall.  :-)

I think Saffy has a Millenia...they are pretty nice...but I don't know about it's reliability.  You can look for an Acura Vigor, but they are pretty hard to find.

CR rates the Millenia highly and it's got all red checks.  It's one of their recommended cars.  If you shop carefully, you can get a great deal on the car, as they languish on lots.  Don't know why!  They're good looking, drive great, the S has lots of oomph and gets good mileage.

The only reason it flopped was the fact that Mazda sold them in the showroom next to the Protege.  People dropping $45K don't like "Protege" service.

A close friend of mine bought one a few months back, and LOVES it.  Not a problem.  The service history for the car was good, and there were hardly any warranty repairs.

For the low price of those cars, I personally think they're easily worth the "risk."
No place I'd rather be...

As far a Millenias go..look ONLY at the S (Supercharged models).Having owned a 2000 model for over 2 years with no problems I am a sample of 1.Enjoy the smooth power, upmarket fittings and it's well screwed together(in Japan).Smallish inside for the Shnaks of the world, uses Premium and is well worth a look as they are "underpriced" in comparison to the Infiniti I30's & "T" models,Avalons(no real equivalency)...older Maximas are the closest challengers.I believe JohngenX and I discussed the +'s &-' of the Millenia S before  an aquaintance of his purchased one..perhaps he could relate their experience.Summation...well worth a look and drive....Have personally put 40K on mine with day to day short trips and 3 longer journeys to the USA...through the Smokies 3 times,6000Feet elevations and twisties,Hilton Head in 33C Humidity and NO PROBLEMOS.20mpg City.. 26mpg Hi-Way...minus 15% fer SPIRITED DRIVING.......some pre 2000 models fall within your price range so DO THE NECESSARY checks and due diligence.

Don't take it so seriously Barrie, my comment was just to poke fun at you a little bit. I really didn't intend in pissing you off.
