96 Civic oxy. sensor update
« on: November 27, 2004, 07:49:03 pm »
Well.....................
I pulled the heat shield off the exhaust manifold to get to and have a better look at the task at hand and all that is needed to change the O2 sensor.  The engine light is on in no small part to the crack in the manifold just above the O2 sensor fitting.  I fail to see any point in installing the new one I picked up this week as it is bound to "light" up again.  Honda has extended the warranty coverage on this problem so I'll be on the phone monday morning.  What a kick in the teeth.  I am unable to have the crack welded as it runs directly into the threads for the O2 sensor.  Is this a job for JB Weld?  I don't think so!  If Honda tells me to pound salt I'll have to start looking for a used manifold or perhaps the aftermarket?  This really blows, or leaks?  I think I need a drink.
I miss my motorcycle!

Ouch! That sucks. Or is it blows or leaks?
Ahhh...sorry Eric, that isn't funny is it? I don't know much about the Hondas except for the fact there is a lot of them around. Perhaps if it can't be fixed while on the engine a trip to a yard may be the cheapest route.

It can be welded. Any distortions can be easily tapped out.

Honda has a extended warranty on this manifold?  Well if that is the case then your original O2 sensor might be good so you can return the new sucker and save some dollars.

Or do what most Honda owners get, replace the manifold with a header. It probably save you a couple of dollars over the manifold replacement. Welding may just by you some time before it cracks again.

I have to agree with Maritime on his suggestion of the header on your engine. It will move the exhaust gas's faster and probably give you a few more HP as well as slightly better gas milage. It should be cheaper to install as well then the stock manifold.

Honda may come good for the repair.  If not I may also be able to have it welded.  This is no fun at all and I havn't even got a HEMI!
