2005 Corolla with 10K on it
« on: November 27, 2004, 02:57:18 pm »
A local Toyota dealership has a few 2005 Toyota Corolla CE package B's, with almost 10K on them for 17,995. How much should I ask the car for ?

Yeah, apparently they got them from a Discount rental franchise which is now closed.

That being the case, you may never know the real history on these cars. Since you want an '05 model, why fool with these when you can a brand new one for a reasonable price?

Full warranty still valid?  I would consider one if it was in the 13K-14K range...basically at wholesale price it would be considered.  But a full PPI should still be done at a garage of your choice.

I wouldn't touch an ex-rental car, even it was a 2005 Corolla....some people who rent cars don't treat their rentals very well. 10,000 km is a lot already for a 2005. Get a new 2005 or 2004 Corolla instead. Anyways, the asking price on the ex-rental is way too pricey IMO.

Yeah, '05 rental Corollas and Camrys were put into service in the summer. The sales went through the roof with the fleet units for those months.

I wouldn't touch a daily rental car either. Plus, Toyotas hold their value to well to justify the gamble. I'd buy new.

Ex-rental cars should be a good value, afterall the first everyone does when they pick a rental is check the oil, read the owners manual from cover to cover in order to be aware of the proper break in procedure for that model. Then of course drive the vehicle gently, because of course they worry about the long condition of that rental agencies investment.

But of course not everybody is quite as perfect as I am. God bless rose coloured glasses, technicolour, homemade wine. Applied in the right amount anything is possible, enough of that stuff & Bush could be a great president & a used rental car could be a great value.

I don't know how much you can knock off from the asking price, but consider that a BRAND NEW 2005 Corolla CE auto with package B has an MSRP of $18545, you'd have to ask for AT LEAST $2000 off to make it worth your while.

And there's the ex-rental thing to consider. I highly doubt that the car was properly broken in. I once got a rental 2004 Camry with 150km on the clock and boy did I redline and push that car hard.

Somebody must think ex-rentals are a good value. Virtually every used 2004 or 2005 for sale is an ex-rental. I will agree that they are not a good buy for internet car forum posters though.

I have my doubts that if one was to study the origin of every car with service problems that you'd find an over representation of vehicles that were rentals for the first few thousand kilometers.

I'd want at least $3500 of MSRP, not a dime less.  I'd walk otherwise.  Let someone else pay too much.
No place I'd rather be...

I would never buy a former rental car.  Ever.  Coming off lease, yes.  Rental - NO.  These are cars that have been abused by people who have nothing invested in the car they are driving.

A car coming off lease now would probably be a 2000 or maybe a 2001. If you want an 04 or 05 you're going to get a daily rental.

Frankly, as a group I don't think that most rental cars are abused. Although there are always louts with no respect for other's property, most people that would rent a Corolla, Taurus, or Sebring are not looking for a joy ride. As far as maintenance goes, I would think that the average rental car gets it more regularly than the average car. After all, a rental company cannot afford to have cars fail due to lax maintenance. Rental cars are certainly cleaned more often.

We can do an informal poll....who here admits to abusing rental cars?

I drive them harder than my own...but I don't abuse them.  By that I mean no brake stands, I don't drop it into D when I've floored the accelerator in neutral.  I do accelerate a bit harder, I don't slow down for speed bumps, and I don't warm the engine up.

I don't abuse them but I sure drive them and not worry about anything. I assume they are serviced properly but have been given rentals occasionally that were not serviced correctly. I remember one Chev product I rented in Maine in the late 70s that had a front-end shimmy at anything over 50mph and the replacement car they gave me blew an engine. I was not happy with the rental car co at the time but forget which one it was.

Have to feel that in general RENTAL CARS= ABUSED CARS is an old SUB-URBAN LEGEND.Based loosely on the old stories of guys renting Mega HP Pony cars from unsuspecting!!rental agencies and then RACING THEM all weekend and returning them with a smile.C'mon happened half a dozen times if that and as Sterling (Silver)Moss says who is gonna race 99.9% of the rental fleet..what with a Blackgrandmain the back and the kiddies squirming are we there yet!!!!!More worried about the detritus they leave behind..Mmmm the sauce was delicious, pass me some more Mayonaisse and Pepsi...!!!

Hertz Mustangs (the 350H or something like that) were the main victims of weekend racing. Black with gold stripes, a pretty car. Try to find an original one today in decent shape; you'll pay mega-bucks if you do. Highly sought after.
