96 Civic H-back. Never been damaged from collision. After a heavy rain I get a bit of water inside on the left side next to the tailight. Could this be the light assy leaking or the hatch gasket? Have you come across this issue in the past. Thaks for your help.

Many vehicles have suffered from this problem over the years. The leak can be from one or the other and is treatable. The product called silicone emulsion is used on the hatch seals and will cause them to swell to their original factory size. If its the tail light then I would coat the seal on it as well or use a caulking type sealant on the lens gasket.

Barrie, is the silicone emulsion only sold by GM or do automotive stores sell it too? $?

I'm not sure about that but at the GM Dealers it is around $5.50 to $6.00 a small bottle. I would think other stores sell it but haven't seen it at all. This stuff really works very well. Takes about 3 days to really penetrate thru but well worth the wait. Makes a vehicle a lot quieter as well as a lot of the squeeks and rattles disappear.

You can buy it at Canadian Tire as well. It comes in an aerosol can, though, and I find it hard to apply without making a mess.

Sounds like GM has a better solution with their shoe polish-type applicator. Thanks for the tip, Barrie1.

When it is applied do you have to leave the doors/hatch/trunk open for any length of time to allow for expansion?

I would recommend leaving the doors or hatch's open for around a hour as the product is milkey white in colour. When it dries and soaks in it turns clear and then close your doors. A very simple job to do and probably should be done about once every 6 months with a older vehicle.

Thanks Barrie , that's good to know. I don't need it now but nice to know about it. Plus whenever I have to use it I'll have to check the weather channel first as I have no garage.

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Rather than waiting until the seals have deteriorated, I prefer to apply the product regularly (once or twice a year) to protect the rubber and keep it in good shape.
