Newbie Question... Invoice Price
« on: November 26, 2004, 09:59:26 am »
We've just come into a little money and well nothing would be more fun than to purchase a new vehicle. I've heard of dealer invoice price but can't seem to find the info on 2 cars we are giving serious thought to 05 Honda Pilot EX-L and the 05 Toyota Highlander.
}}} Can anyone help? This is our first time at buying a new car and well I'd like to go in there with real negotiating power!
Thanks!

There are a few outfits in Canada that will gladly let you know what invoice is on those vehicles - for a price. A google search should tuen them up. Beware that most of these companies are merely lead referral services for dealers that have paid to have potential customers sent to them. Of course, knowing invoice has no bearing on what you will likely pay. Honda and Toyota dealers are notorious for having a "take it or leave it attitude."

FWIW, in my estimation these vehicles will probably have a margin of around $3,000 between invoice and MSRP.

I second most of Sterling said but you'll likely find the invoice & MSRP on these vehicles to be higher than $3 grand, they typically give higher incentives then that plus commisions & etc that the retailers have to pay out in order to turn a profit. But he is right you will likely have to pay the MRSP or take a walk down to one of the big three. Access Canada at Toyota has adopt Saturn's set pricing scheme and Honda tends to be as flexible with pricing. My advice would be to price them all take note of interest rates as they tend to be high at Toyota, Honda & to a lesser extend Nissan.

Honda and Toyota are pretty hard to negotiate...so maybe $3000 less will be the maximum you will get

I just checked edmunds.com and the spread between invoice and MSRP for a mid-level Highlander was almost exactly $3,000 and the Pilot was about $3400. This info is for the U.S. so the actual dollar amounts won't matter. But there's no reason that the markups would be much different here.

Interesting I've never known of a company to sell their products at less than cost before.

Thanks to everyone who responded! For anyone who is interested, we've heard that dealer cost is approx.$40,500 for the EX-L. MSRP $44,000 for a difference of $3500. }

Let's see, if they negotiate off $3000 through incentives, that leaves $500 for Salesman Commission, light/heat/mortgage. I'd hate to try and make a living selling cars on that little money.

Huh? So making $500 equals selling at less than cost?

EX-L, 2004 Canadian invoice was 39345, mark-up 9.01%.  % shouldn't change for 2005.  Highlander, 2004 pkg B V6 had an invoice of 36021, and a % markup of 10.40%.  Good luck.

Welcome back, Eax. Nice to know some of us really have another life besides this site !! Don't worry about Md's post count - he's admits to being a "ho" about it. And he is the highest on here. He even has a PC in the washroom so he doesn't have to miss any time logged on.

Do dealers not get additional incentives from the manufacturer (e.g. volume, etc.) at a higher level that if allocated back truly lower their invoice cost per vehicle. In other words, $500 over 'invoice' is probably actually better than that to them - yes/no?

Sometimes. But is it reasonable to expect a dealer to give you more of a discount in January because they might reach a volume quota next December?
