I know, I know... this news is not directly related to automobiles, but since people save their hard-earned money in banks for major purchases like cars and homes, I thought of posting this alarming news...

Scrapyard receiving bank customers' private data

By David Akin — The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has been faxing confidential information about hundreds of its customers to a scrap yard operator in West Virginia for more than three years, and he says he can't get them to stop.

Wade Peer says he has been overwhelmed since 2001 by internal CIBC fund transfer request forms containing the social security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers and detailed bank account data of several hundred bank customers.

Now thats Scary, thankfully he's a decent guy. If I was one of these customers I would be sueing also.

I have had poor service and had some bad experiences over the past 10 years with CIBC. I have pulled everything out except my daily chequing account. CIBC has the best online banking services IMHO…. so I keep one account active. This does not surprise me at all.

All the banks have their foibles and have become little more than arrogant maony-machines. For me, it's the Royal. They treated us like crap, so we switched to CIBC and our branch treats us exceptionaly well. But, I'm sure that for everyone they treat well there is ten they don't.

The Schedule A Charter has created a failure-proof banking system, but at a real cost. We've created an oligopoly than functions as a loosely regulated monopoly.

I had bad experiences with Royal and vowed never to deal with them again. Now it's BMO and TD...and Scotia.

Those big banks are silly with their fees too. TD is gettin' my goat these days. I like the fact that PC Financial is really easy to use online and no annoying people to deal with... and best of all... no fees. Of course, being under the CIBC flagship, the W.Virginia guy's probably got all my info on that account. Ah, ya can't win.

They're all the same, guys, no real difference between any of the big 5 or 6. Lot's of folk here deal with Credit Unions. I've been with the Royal since about 1985 or so, but they are no better or worse than the others.

Does anyone deal with HSBC over there, as that's who I'm with in the UK and they've been great. Was going to stay with them in Canada and wondered if they are any good there?

HSBC is in Western Canada at least (not sure about Central Canada). They took over the old Bank of BC here about 20 years ago. They have branches thruout BC and AB. I'm told they are OK to deal with and you would be alright with them (depending on where in Canada you are going).

As Ovr50 said, the major banks are virtually all the same here. For most people it boils down to which web site has more attractive colors.

For us it was who had the closest branch. Also, CIBC waives all service charges for us. RBC didn't offer that, not even close. They wanted $30 a month for some bogus VIP service that CIBC matched for nothing.

If you're low income, you pay service charges out to wazoo. For us Yuppies, we don't pay. Seems kinda funny, eh?

I deal with CIBC too and I ain't too pleased of the fact my personal info could be used by an unknown. I saw that tape on tv tonight showing the scrapyard guy reading some town names from a bunch of lists and then returning the file to his cabinet! According to a news release CIBC says he's supposed to be shredding all those faxes, since 2002? WTF is that all about? More fackin' liars than honest people around eh?

I dealt with TD until they decided to hold all deposits (even if done through a teller) for five days. I moved on to BMO who "accidently" closed my account and transfered all my money to another person's account. Now I'm with PC and I love it...no fees, no hassles, no limitations. Not only that - I get free groceries! Just from using my bank card to buy groceries at Superstore, I've saved up enough points to buy me 187 dollars worth of groceries or gas! Think I'll go for the gas...stupid truck.

Nice to see you again Wanna! I too have PC and happy that I don't have to pay fees.

However, I've never used my points to purchase groceries as the exchange rate is too low ($50 = 50,000 points; 1 : $0.001) You might want to consider exchanging PC points for PetroPoints, then use those points for free car washes ($8.99 = 3,900 points; 1 : $0.0023) and washer fluids ($4.49 = 3,700 points; 1 : $0.0012). I do that all the time to get more mileage from my points

I do my carwashes in my driveway with my pressure washer...although with winter its a bit hard and I'm a little sketchy about moving it into the garage (might p.o. my dad)...he's a bit of a neat freak in his garage.
