Damn damn damn....this throws a wrench into all my plans.

79 911 SC with Turbo body.  Extensive work on paint and mechanicals.  He's asking $24500 which is high to me.  Haven't seen it up close in person yet....should I offer something for it?  I really wanted an 88 and up but if the price is right and the restoration of this one is done well......

Definitely go have a Look, it will drive you nuts if you don't. I am sure the guy will take less but make sure you are ready as they can be an expensive Toy to own.

Agree with Barrie.  AND, take some pics BEFORE you do anything foolish, and post them here.  You'll get lots of opinions, advice, and enabling.

Ooooooooooo.  This is gonna be goooooooood.  Very cool.

What's a 911 worth?  How long is a piece of string?

Values vary greatly, especially in the older car market.  You can pay $25K for ANY 911, regardless of age.  Sometimes a 79 911 Turbo will sell for more than an 88.  It's a weird market, and there are only a couple hard and fast rules...

1. Modified cars usually sell for much less than original cars, unless the mods are tuner mods that are "above reproach" meaning RUF or factory specials.  EXCEPT...

2. Cars with mechanical mods like updated tensioners and other such stuff are desirable.

Modified bodywork is typically not worth anything and owners usually waste their money unless they find a poseur kid that is dying to pretend he's got a turbo and only wishes to pay 1/2.  UNLESS...

I know an engineer with an SC model that has turbo bodywork 'cause he needs it.  It's got 934 brakes and other bits and a 450hp Andial engine with RUF six cogger.  The car has $70K+ in mods and would probably fetch $40K.

That 79 might be worth the money if everything is done right and the car is pristine.  But, in the right market, a bone stock well worn 79 SC can fetch close to $20K, or sink to $15K or less.  Look up a 79 911SC in the "blackbook" and you'll see what I mean...

yes, I know about the book, don't write, I was being sarcastic...
No place I'd rather be...

Tree lights? I got a whole MONTH to do that holiday stuff yet. I'm waiting a long while yet.

Ah, the pix finally came up on my screen - that one does look pretty good just from that. Like the coupes w whale tail and red is the best. Mmmm.

I had to compress the file.....he sent me a 600K file so that's the beast.  The original image is huge....and the paint and whatnot looks very good.  I'm asking for more pictures of engine and interior.  Also asked for a full list of what has been done and when.  This is not good...... image

My wife loves Christmas....we have our tree up and wreath hung on the door and the garland on the way.

IIRC the SCs have some kinda engine issue. I forgot what it was. Something about pretensioners...
Anyways that SC pic seemed to be in nice condition exterior wise. Too bad my wife will never allow us to own a 911 that has a 915 gear box.

Honestly, driving classic Carreras are tre kewl. Separates the conoisseurs from poseurs.

Looks nice, but of course, up close is required.  I can see it's "correct" with the shark-fin fender protector (which barely works, expect TONS of chips on the bulging fender) and Fuchs.  People think those wheels are "dated" and "small" but they're forged alloy masterpieces that are of much higher quality than 99.9% of tuner wheels on the market.  You'll spend $1200 a wheel to get something made better.

Anyone that's spent all that money on the car will probably have updated the chain tensioners and the airbox.

I would actually prefer this car to a water-cooler 99 model.  I'm weird.  Water pumps belong in other cars...

Thanks John.  I'm of the same thinking.  I talked to my wife about it and she said and I quote "Why don't you just go get a newer one?"

I had to explain the air cooled vs. the water cooled thing.....the fact that I like this body design...etc.  In the end, I just gave her my History of Porsche book to read.  :-)

I'm going to ask for some more pictures and probably head on over for a test drive and closer look.

I'm not too concerned with the gearbox, the X50 would have been my first choice but if this car is done well and he didn't skimp on anything, it might be worth my while.

By the way...I know what you mean by those bulging  fenders....a friend of mine has the M Roadster and he added a set to his car....just to make it look ugly and he still gets chips.

Nice colour MD, I can understand your interest in this car as it is a Georgous vehicle. Take your time and really have a good look before deciding on to buy or not to buy.

Bah, having a butchered "turbo-look" is like having an otherwise really hot blonde with over-sized, really fake boobs.  Not for me, but I guess some people like 'em.  She was hot before, whatcha need the fake body work for?

The comment was made above referring to the air cooled versus water-cooled 911s and how it differentiates the afficionados from the poseurs.  Same with turbo-bodied cars that don't have the engine to back it up.

That frankenstein you've posted looks beautiful, but knowing what's underneath is of no interest to me and would only get you a half-victory in our competition, IMO.  Ever seen the Crying Game?  Things aren't always what they seem.

Merry Xmas.  :-)

I haven't done anything yet.  Just spoke with his mechanic....and the tensioners have been updated, tranny rebuilt 10K ago, clutch done, it's got 94 911 heated leather seats, one leak in the engine, it's a European 911...went to the US, then came to Canada 15 years ago.  It's got a dual exhaust...and that's the only upgrade on it.  It was repainted...but only the front half so I am thinking the paint may not match perfectly.

I don't want a Turbo 911.  Don't need it.  Just want a Carrera.  As for the Turbo body....I didn't do it....but I'll take it...same goes for a blonde with a fake woodpile.  :-)

Last service was at 206K...the current owner does not drive it much....so I still might go take a look see.
