Looking for tire recommendations: 2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE
« on: November 24, 2004, 04:56:17 pm »
I need to buy new all-season tires for my stock rims (I believe the stock tires are 255/65/16).

Can anyone recommend a good set of all-season tires?

I want to make sure that they'll be good in snowy weather (for the 5 days of snow we get) but best for the rest of the year (comfortable ride, long tread life, etc).

Thanks!

Would you consider an all terrain tire like the BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO which is also rated for severe snow? Other than the Nokian WR, there are not many all year tires that are rated for severe snow. Like most all terrain tires, the ride would be a bit rough.

This tire is on my shortlist when I am in need of new tires. I have a 2WD compact pickup truck.

We don't get a lot of snow (Vancouver, BC) but I want to make sure it can handle the snow we do get.

Also, even though I have a 4WD, I don't go off-roading so I don't think I need an all terrain tire.

I was looking at Michelins (http://www.tiretrends.com/tire_info.php3?detailID=4277)

or the Yokohama's GEOLANDER A/T+ II (http://www.tiretrends.com/tire_info.php3?detailID=1413).

Any thoughts?

Again, many thanks!

Consumer Reports did a light truck tire test in their
November 2004 issue.  Here are the top three:
1.  Goodyear Fortera HL Edition
2.  Pirelli Scorpion STR A
3.  Hankook DynaPro AS RH03
Best snow is the Goodyear
Best hydroplaning is the Hankooks (might be important in the lower mainland (I live here too)
Go for the best price, since the top three are very close.

Definitely consider the BFG AT KO as mentioned by Davidy. It is one of the few tires that actually carries the severe winter rating (Snow flake inside of a montain). A great all around tire that will not be overly aggressive, but offer the snowability you crave.

Other tires to consider with a more all-season design (Not recommended for snow) are:

TireTrends - Michelin LTX M/S

TireTrends - Yokohama Geloander HTS

The Michelin offers a very quiet ride and good wet performance. The Yokohama offers a great value and good wear with a 100,000km limited treadwear warranty.
