Thinking of buying 94 Ford Explorer
« on: November 24, 2004, 02:27:28 pm »
Hi there,

I'm looking at a 94 Ford Explorer Limited (V6 4L - 4x4/ 4dr /1 owner / 171 kms /$6,200 Firm. I have no experience with buying trucks, but would like one to get up a hill in winter. Just need to see if this sounds like an ok deal...

Here are the faults i found with the truck:

-Rust on back bumper and undercarriage (body rust free)
-2 smallish dents in body
-right fog light glass broken
-passenger window only works from drivers side controls
-a leak coming from under truck (front closer to drivers side / clear in colour)
-drivers door may need a pin - only closes tight when shut hard
-two stone chips in windshield

This truck has been used for towing small boats and has a rusted hitch where he had lowered boat into water. I will remove hitch as not needed.

Test drive: Appears to start good }}and idel ok, Drives nice, brakes feel good, body appears rust free, clean on inside, leather seats in exc cond.

Any info appreciated as i have no idea - Thank you....Cheers!!

Welcome Electro.

I have not owned an Explorer, but it would appear that $6200 is too much for the truck.  I live in Ontario so I cannot offer a specific price range, but I would have a look at prices in your area on similar Explorers.

Even though the Exploder, er...Explorer, has received some bad press I don't think it is a bad vehicle.  My wife's friend had a 1991 model and she finally got rid of it with about 350k kms on the clock.  The engine and tranny didn't need any overhauling in that time.

Good luck with your possible purchase.  Others will come along to offer their advice.

Good vehicle but the small issues like you mentioned "-passenger window only works from drivers side controls
-a leak coming from under truck (front closer to drivers side / clear in colour)
-drivers door may need a pin - only closes tight when shut hard "
are the usual complaints with this truck.

If you can live with these types of small problems (cause they will continue), its not a bad choice, as the main components should be long lasting.

You will find a few problems with the electricals in these Trucks and the power window switchs are known to be a bugbear. I would have the tranny serviced as well as the towing can be quite hard on them at times. The rust underneath can be dealt with by undercoating. The door pin should be changed to realign the door, probably stop the leak then. The price is a little hi for the vehicle as well. I would offer around $4800. and no higher then $5500. to buy it.

One of my best buddies owns a 94 explorer. He has to get rid of it soon because over the summer, while driving back from the states, something blew in the engine and he was told that the entire engine needs to be replaced, which is obviously very costly. He now can't drive the car over 45 kph on the advice of his mechanic until he fixes it. Other problems he has had over the years was the passenger door won't lock, Always seems to have a headlight out, and to replace the brake pads several times and blown speaker (that one's his fault. I keep telling him to turn down the music!)

He still likes the vehicle though. It is tremendous in snow. Won't get stuck anywhere. Like S60 said, if you can deal with the minor problems it has now, then it should be an alright vehicle, but just be aware that these problems will not go away once they start. But it has lasted him a good 8 years though and just started to fall apart recently. Prior to that, he had very little problems.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Older Explorers & Bronco II's were notorious for having to replace front U-Joints yearly. If the memory serves me correctly they switched over to CV joints in 1996 or 1997. Check the front end, if it has the twin I beam suspension check the u-joints for binding, if they bind they'll need to be replaced{$200-300 for both + Alignment}. We had a 1988 BroncoII for most of a decade{2.9L 5spd} tough drivetrain, horrible electrical gremlins. As Barrie said, service the tranny, the rest doesn't sound like major issues.

Don't buy it.  They are rust buckets.  It might have already been repainted once before.  The transfer cases are crap.  It's only a part time 4 wheel drive system so they get used inappropriately.  It's in a bad mileage zone being 171,000 @ 10 years old.  Pretty well the time everything bigs breaks down.

It's been a tow vehicle dispite the positive spin the previous owner puts on about "lite" duty towing only.  It would not be a guess to say that the tranny has never received a flush because this is a under maintained vehicle.

Unless you do your own repairs and score places for cheap parts you will drop 5K into this unit before you know it.

DON'T BUY IT!

My sources would also call for a pass on this truck.  I have heard much the same comments on them as a result of poor build quality.  Get a used Toyota or maybe a subie?
I miss my motorcycle!

Thanks for all the advice! I decided to forget about the Explorer...i've taken your advice and now looking at a 90 Toyota 4-Runner - sounds like this is much more reliable and what i need to get through winter.

Thanks again everyone.

What about a Subaru?  AWD, better fuel economy, etc. A Subie equipped with a good set of snow tires is a force to be reckoned with.  There are a number of forum members who can attest to this.

Just how bad is this hill?
