Selling an Alberta registered car in BC...
« on: November 23, 2004, 01:24:53 am »
I have a car (1995 Neon) that I inherited from my family in Alberta... I've been driving it under their insurance in Vancouver for a month or so and I wanted to register it here...

Unfortunately, it looks like I would have to do a lot of work on the car to get it to pass the safety inspection for cars being brought into BC... it's not that the car is in really bad shape, but little things like a crack in the windshield, etc. mean that I might end up spending several hundred just to get the car in shape to pass.

I would sell it here and get something else, but of course, you can't sell a car that isn't registered here. I have been thinking about maybe selling the car for parts (the engine is in great shape for a 95 Neon, and most of the body and interior is pretty decent) but I don't know if this would be feasible.

Any advice or ideas?

I doubt that selling for parts would be that profitable. It may be simple math but I don't understand why spending a few hundred to get into shape to pass the BC registration test doesn't make sense? You say you wish to sell it anyway, so why not spend a few $ (since it cost you zero to buy) and recoup the spend $ as you sell. Parting it out is tedious, time-consuming and you may never get the full value for it.

BTW, welcome to the Forum.

Yeah, that's probably what I'll do... I just wanted to poke my head in here and see if there were any other ideas.

Had I known what I know now, I would have sold the car in Alberta and bought something out here with the cash... I could have at least ended up with a five speed beater instead of an auto one... :-)

Thanks for the welcome, by the way...

dodge neons are known for their engine problems, i doubt you will get alot if you sell a car whole, but theres also a chance you wont get alot for the parts as well. either way i think your stuck on which one you would prefer.
The most wanted cars of my uber uber list
4th generation supra with twin turbo which is the most affordable/practical on the list
If i had all the money in the world, i would buy an army of Supras and crash them into the tree stumps

This Neon actually has a pretty decent engine; it did have the head gasket go a few years back (common problem on this model) but since then, it's been running nice.

At any rate, I'm not crazy about driving the car around under my parents' Alberta insurance policy, though, so I want to get it registered quickly if I'm going to keep it... their insurer says that anybody driving the car is covered for an accident, but I'm sure they would get nailed with a higher premium if I did get in a crash out here...

I just don't get it?  You are in the market for a 330i...can't find the deal you want because you want a 2 year old Beamer for 30K....why not go for a 325i?  Why go all the way down to a beater if you are in the market for a 330?  The 325 will still hold value when you finally find a 330 for 30K.

i like the 330i but i figure since my dads going to reclaim his car soon i might as well get a beater and continue finding a 330i. i dont mind getting a 2001 330i(the year it came out), but the problem is people are still wanting alot for them. i would consider a 325i since their alot cheaper, but do you know if its possible to slip in a 330i engine into the 325i engine bay?

i found plenty of 330i so far but the 3 main things i want are leather seats, power seats and a manual transmission. im not picky, i just know what i want.

i would buy a beater because during the winters in alberta its nice to have something that can handle the salt/ice/snow. and since neons arent treasured much, the insurance companies might cut me some slack
