Squeaky rear seats on Acura 1.6 EL
« on: November 23, 2004, 12:02:24 am »
I have a 1997 Acura 1.6 with leather seats. In past year the split rear seats make squeaking noise with every movement of the car. I think they are shifting slightly and the leather rubbing together makes noise. It is driving me nuts and I do not know how to stop it.
Living my BMW dream.

Slybry welcome to the Forum. I suggest useing a good leather treatment on the seats which should quiet them down a bit. I have leather in my Seville and the good oils soften and quiet them down quite a bit. Good for the leather as well.

I am not sure the leather rubbing is making a squeaking sound.  If it is, then the rear seatbacks are not locked in properly.  Double check to see that the seatbacks are securely locked in place.  I used to own a 2001 EL and the latch that releases the seatbacks malfunctioned and caused one of the seatbacks to never lock in.

I had an equipment malfunction.  It wasn't my fault.   It was defective.  Honest.  It was working before.  Must be getting worn out from overuse.  image

Thanks for feeback. I have used leather treatment and the seatbacks are locked. I suspect even when lock in upright position there is now play in the locking mechanism. I see no adjustments available to tighten.

My dealer told me to turn up the radio. Just another reason to forget dealer service

C'mon, let's show some initiative here. Rear seats are not a complex system. Grab a can of WD-40 and go nuts on everything that moves back there.

Look for some thin sheets of felt type material, cut into small peices and place in between the locks. Totally keep the noise right down.

Good idea Barrie. I used furniture hardwood floor protector sheets in the past. They can be found at home improvement stores. The sheets have an adhesive backing and adhere well to metal and plastic.

You got it Barrie, that's what I was going to say.  Stuff the felt my friend.  Enjoy the silence.

Have use stip of furniture felt along back edge where seat meets the back shelf of car as suggested. Took it for a quick spin and think this might do the trick.
I am having a problem getting the felt to stick properly. It could be the fact that it is cool out or the texture of the hard plastic on back shelf.
If the squeaks are really gone I will glue this more firmly in place with epoxy glue (unless someone out there has another suggestion how to stick it to the plastic).
Looks like the problem stated on my very 1st posting has been resolved (I think). Thanks for the help.
