A QUIZ - your job is to guess the price. In Sept '04 in the UK, a 1929 Mercedes Benz 38/250 SSK was successfully sold to a collector. The car was red with red leather, painted wire wheels, a 7.1 L supercharged straight six, 220hp. One of only 36 built. This car had (prior to this sale) been owned by one man since 1931 (a total of 63 years). The car has documented history from new,  and had never been restored, just maintained. This SSK is said to be the most original SSK in the world. The last line of the story was: "The price was the highest paid at auction this century for a car, and it was worth every penny."

Now you know it'll be expensive, but what the price to the nearest $100,000?Huh? Don't cheat.

The answer is $7,425,989 US to be precise. Yikes!! I hope the buyer is not a speculator.

I also read in last day or so that a new record for the famous 1971 Hemi Cudas has been set by a 42 year old developer from the Dakotas who paid over $2 million US for one.

One has to think this market is getting ready to bust (just as the Italian exotics did in the early 1990s). A lot of well-heeled folk have lost money in stocks over the past 4 or 5 years so are putting funds into collector cars. Interest rates remain historically low. I would hate to the sucker at the end of the chain when the music stops !!!!!!!!

I would like to have some of these rare cars also but whats the use if you can't drive them whenever you want. For the money for the Hemi I would have built my own and been a lot Happier as it would be on the Road all the time.

I would have only offered $7.41 million.  Buyer is overpaying.  :-)

Somebody probably did offer that amount, so he had open his last Piggy Bank to get it. Hence the higher amount.

Don't you be callin' me names now!

Cripes! I can't even imagine how big a pile of $1000 bills that would be.
I love those old classics and collectors cars but I don't think I'd be pullin' stunts like that!

A friend of mine had the same thinking about the market being soft so he took some money and instead of buying into the market...got himself a Porsche 356 speedster.  Went on holidays and the field mice got into it and chewed the carpet.  The mice knew what they were doing...left the M Roadster alone and only went after the Porsche.  :-)
