Water Leak in the Trunk

There seems to be a water leak in the trunk because the water builds up at the sides of the trunk. The stuff in the trunk are damp(not completely wet but a little moisture is evident)... The car has never experienced an excess amount of rain(we moved to Vancouver Island about 3 months ago from Penticton where it is extrememly dry weather)  

The trunk may not have been shut properly but I can't be sure...

any info would be greatly appreciated

How old is the vehicle? I live in Kelowna and I know what the difference in rainfall is between here and VI. If the vehicle is older and spent all its life here, the weather stripping rubbers may be dried out and hardened. In looking at your profile, if you're speaking of the 1988 Aries, I bet that is your problem. If so, just get a good service shop to redo the rubber stripping.

There is a product on the market called Silicone Emulsion which I buy from GM Dealers for around $5.00 per small bottle. It has a shoe polish type applicator on it and you coat the seals with it. Takes about 3 days for the transformation to happen and the seals swell right back up again on the vehicle. They go back to factory size and quiet. After this 1st treatment you do it again about every 6 months. Trust Me this works. Antique Car owners use it, you should to.

Yes Roadr thats why I said the antique word. This product is so cheap that it works really well. Every Vehicle should have this treatment every year as it stops the squeeks and rattles as well as the moisture. I'm sure other dealers besides the GM ones sell as well. With all my kids cars and trucks and my own I buy this by the case of 12 bottles. Try it on your trunk seal and see the difference right away.

I had a 1987 Mazda 323 and 1994 Nissan Sentra with leaks in trunk. The seal around the lid looked great. Both times it turned out the water was getting in from behind tailight assemby. I removed the light and applied a new bead of black sealant on the assembly and problem was fixed.

You are  correct.  I have a  1994  Sentra.  It had the same problem and it turns out as you said the water was leaking through the tail lights.   I glued the sucker  water tight.   :-)

Barrie1, would you happen to know the part number or exect name of the Silicone Emulsion? I tried calling a couple of Chevy dealers and they had no idea of what the prouct was, they had something like what you described but costs $52/small bottle. I have a problem with water leaking into my 92 accord and would like to try it. Thanks.

Flexman Welcome to the Forum. The Part No. on this product is 1#10953014. THe name is definitely Silicone Emulsion and the bottle is just under 4"s high. It comes with a shoepolish type of applicator inside the bottle. Mix up in bottle before applying to get a white colour. This product really works well.

My 92 Mercury Topaz developed rust holes around the trunk.   At one point, it was quoted to me by a shop $100 to patch with welds the two holes I had.  I never did it.  That water getting in there made a mess.  I had some books and papers I should have been keeping in the apartment.   Bottomline: the Topaz has electric windows that dont work; the rear left door is permanently stuck closed.  AC non functioning; Interior Ive trashed; gouge in the windshield from the wipers.  Needs new muffler and tailpipe. BIGGER problem than any of those is a weak ball joint or weak tie-rod, the car does not take left turns good.  And then, would I have gotten a tune up on top of all that, given its got 70,000 to 90,000 miles?  I hate the car.  Kept it parked for a year and a half.  I live close to work. I let the car insurance lapse two or three times. Hated the car. didnt want to fix these things.  didnt want to get rid of it. Now I have my 91 camaro.   When you ENJOY the car you have, its not so painful to spend the money.  THIS is the psychology of car ownership.  If you like the car, you take better care of it.   Choose the car.  dont let the car choose you.  If its difficult  financing issues, the new car guy will get you approved for the car you hate. Over in the used car department might be an absolutely beautiful car with moderate mileage that you love.  As for that MErcury Topaz, I still have it. I gotta call the scrap yard to come take it away.

If it still runs put an add in the local paper and sell it for parts. You'll get more for it this way. From the wreckers $75.00 to $100.00. From the paper you should ask $500. as you can go down. Make a good parts car.
