An odd group to be chosing from...
« on: November 19, 2004, 05:30:12 pm »
A young collegue of my wife's is car shopping.  She has a MAX of $15,000 to spend, and wants a good used car.  She really likes my wifes 01 Outback Ltd. and went looking for one.  Along the way she found a few $15K-ish choices and asked my advice.  Sheesh, don't ya hate being the "car guy" once in a while?

Anyway, she found an 01 Outback (non-Limited, so no side bags, leather, or sunroofs) on a used lot, obviously bought at auction in Quebec or Ontario (has a bilingual dealer sticker remnant) and has 159,000km's on the clock.  Very high for an 01, but the price is very low to reflect that.  They're asking $13K, might come down a tad.  Well within her budget, but pretty high miles.  This morning I swung by and had a quick look, and it looks straight, but of course, a PPI would be required.

She also found a nice black 2000 Protege LX with power stuff and 98,000kms sitting beside the Subie.  It looks good (good exterior, anyway) and is priced right at $9000.  She would be well within her budget and have a decent car if this one was good, or find a similar one.

Also on her list was an 01 Volvo S40 with leather and about 120,000kms that I haven't seen.  It's priced at $13,000 private sale.  I haven't heard great things about the S40, but haven't heard bad things either.  She found a 99 S80 turbo for $16K in the paper since the S40 triggered a "Volvo" response.  The early S80's have a bad rep, but I don't know if they deserve it.

After seeing the black Protege, she headed to the Mazda dealer and found, of course, buckets of them, but another thing grabbed her.  It's an 01 Forester "S" with only 70,000kms.  I happen to know this "truck" and it's a nice clean unit still under driveline warranty and has been well cared for.  The crux is that they're asking $19,000, which is well beyond her budget.  She might get them closer to $15K, but I doubt they'd go to that mark, especially including tax.

I have no idea of what to tell her.  She likes the Forester the best, and she should.  It's the nicest thing on her list, but she might be wasting everyone's time trying to get down to $15,000 on it.  I would be partial to the 01 Outback, but she has a tight budget and I'm not sure about starting out tapped out with 159K on the odo.  If it were me, I'd take a chance if the PPI were fine, but that's me.

The Protege is a nice car for a young woman with a limited budget and income, as it's not bad on gas, cheap to insure, and at $6K under budget, a prudent choice.  But, no AWD or luxury features. (htd seats, etc.)

The Volvo is a mystery to me.  Could be an expensive car to run, but maybe not.  Mutsui does not have a good rep, and the S40 was a joint effort.  Hhhhhm.  I know nothing about the S80.

Any other suggestions for someone spending $10-15K on a decent used car?  It seems to be a popular price point for used cars as she has a list that is getting longer by the second.
No place I'd rather be...

I think for someone on a tight budget like she seems to be, I'd stick with the Protege/Corolla/Civic options... Probably Protege because of its cheaper price when looking at used cars.

A quick look on autotrader.ca reveals a bunch of 2002-2003 Proteges with around 45-50000kms with prices around 14000$. I'm sure she could find a nice deal for around 12000$.

Johngenx, a 2001 S40 with that mileage is going for about $16,000 in Ontario, at $13,000 the price is pretty reasonable.I have not heard of any issues with the S40, good solid vehicle, and the 1.9t is a strong motor.

The 1999 S80, I would not touch, I know some people have been lucky, but I wouldn't recommend it being the 1st year model, the car was rushed to market, hence lots of problems.

Personally, I wouldn't mess with the ON/PQ Subie w 159kms on it. No history and major problems could be looming, even with checking it out. I would tend to second Shnak's comments above. AWD is not a mandatory thing, I spent decades in Alberta without it and got along just fine. If she has FWD in a reliable Mazda/Toy/Honda, she would be fine. I don't know enough about Volvo to comment.

I'm with Ovr on the Subie....it's either a delivery vehicle, or a real estate agentmobile or traveling sales vehicle in it's past life.  Either way...it's a lot of K's for "a young woman with a limited budget and income".

Yeah, I agree.  She likes the Subarus, but the only way for her to get into one on her budget is to take a leap of faith on one with high miles.  She's only 25, and her income will rise, but she should not get into something over her head.  Having to drop some money into a car without notice is hurtful for her.

The Forester is a sure bet, but she can't go over that $15K mark, no matter what.  I told her to talk to the dealer and simply state that she needs the price to be $15K tax in, and they should be able to give her an answer on the spot, without wasting a lot of time.  The market price for an 01 Forester S with slush box and decent km's seems to be in the $16-20K range, so you never know...

I'd like to see the S40.  This is a private sale, and I understand the car has good records and is a local car.  I like the price too.  I guess the out-of-warranty state and unknown S40 label have depressed prices.

Just got off the phone with my much-much better half, and I guess we're having dinner out and going to have a gander at that S40.  That's fine with me, her collegue is a very pleasant, EXTEMELY easy-on-the-eyes 25 year old blonde...

(of course, I never noticed that...)

Budget = Protege

Sporty, quick, reliable, good on gas.  Drive it for 3-4 years and save to get what she really wants.

S40 wouldn't be the way I'd go.  Maintenace on European cars is a killer.  Volvo shop rates can be stiff.

All of the above is assuming she doesn't need an "image" car for work.

S40 would not be a good choice.  She will get nickeled and dimed to death on it during the next five years.

If you'd like to see her again over the next few years, then direct her to nearest Honda dealer and get a BRAND NEW Civic coupe with whatever options she desires and finance it at 2.8% for 5 years.

25 year old chicks want something that runs and runs and never breaks down; Honda Civic.

What will she be using this car for?  Just a short commute to work?  Does she venture out of the city much?  Skiing?  How big is her family?  Does she have a dog?  If it's nothing but a commuter car, there'd be nothing wrong with a little Protege.  If she's a weekend getaway sort of gal that likes to ski in the mountains...a Forester or Outback would be great.

Why not a new Hyundai Accent 5 or something?

Since the Accent 5 is mentioned, I'll throw in The Kia Rio RXV.

Where are you guys coming from, this is a young lady who probably has no experience with cars and for the money involved. $15000. she can buy a brand new car from GM with 5 year warranty. Why ever buy used in that money area.. It don't make sense.

Barrie - that's all in, can she buy a new GM for under $15 taxes in? Maybe a Daewoo GM only?

I'll second S60's comments on the pair of Volvos. Although the S80 is a great vehicle, being first year is kinda sketchy.

Friend of mine owns a 99 protege. Has had a few electrical problems, but otherwise, fairly reliable. I can't comment towards the outback, I have no experience, but given the other choices availible to her, sounds like this high miliaged subbie should be scratched off the list.

John, any low-mileage Impreza in your (gorgeous) blonde friend's radar scope? A used Impreza Outback Sport is a good alternative to the Forester
