1989 Nissan Stanza GXE market value?
« on: November 15, 2004, 11:41:17 pm »
I've been poking around buy and sell to try and find a "market value" for my dad's car. it's a 1989 Nissan Stanza GXE automatic w/ the CA16E engine.

Where else can I get market values? the Black book doesn't even go as far as 1989.

Running?  Most running 1989 anythings are $1000-$1500 cars.  They can be hard to get a safety cert. for, and that old of a car is priced as a "beater" regardless of condition.

That said, I do see some lots with 88-90 Civics for outrageous prices like $4000 or more.  Try $2900 or something in the "free" ads and see if anyone bites.  If not, throttle back to $1500 and see.

If your Dad is trading, he gets nothing.  Nothing.  Don't even bother.
No place I'd rather be...

TRUER words were never spoken..my '91Mitsubishi Galant was sneered at by the sales manager when I was buying my Millenia. He didn't know I was at the water fountain outside his office and heard him tell the salesman I was dealing with.."That POS isn't worth crap"...endearing isn't it?
Got $500 !!?? off the deal (I THINK??) for it.Sell it privately to a first time buyer for $1,000(if it's worth that??) and make the both of you happy.....

Any car thit will pass Safety and the E-test is worth $1500. in the marketplace to-day. If its in better shape then average ask $2500. as you can always come down. Sell it private to get the best out of it.

If you're trading, YES.  If not, no.  Not sure about regs in Ontario, or wherever you are, but in Alberta, you'd have to have the car pass a safety inspection, and few cars that age will pass without work.  If your Sentra will, then Barrie is right, it's a good bet to sell since the buyer can just start driving.

We are getting rid of our own 88 626 now, and it's in great shape, but still needs about $700 to pass the inspection.  Since the car would fetch $1200-1500 certified, I would be lucky to get $500-700 for it.

On trade, nothing.  No dealer would resell the car, so they just wholesale it off right away. The car is just a bother to them.

A safety is not that hard to pass if the car is in running condition.  It has to have reasonable braking performance, all the lights must work, and have no serious structural damage (i.e. rust eating large holes in the floor).  I'm probably missing something, but if your dad has been driving it to this point, the safety may be no big deal.

How many km and what is the rust situation like.  Lots of buyers in Owen Sound for cheap Japanese cars.

Hey my g/f's parents have a similar year car, with only 40,000Km on it and the original tires!  Not worth much but it's in good shape so should fetch something on the market if sold privately.

In Alberta, must have good brakes, no leaking shocks or fully worn bushings, operating parking brake, good tires, all lights working, good wiper blades, and a few others.  The killer is leaking or worn shocks on cars with struts.  Even a cheap pair of struts, maybe a couple tires, and some other minor stuff adds up fast.

I'd sell it as is, ask $2500 and see the repsonse.  You can always lower the price.

Saf, I asked before I got my subbie they didn't want to sell it.... not sure why, they are retired now and don't require 2 cars as they did before. It is stored in the winter so it has never seen salt.  I believe it is manual as well :-)

If selling doesn't work and you don't think you'll get much money for it, you can always donate it somewhere. It'll at the very least give you a tax rebate.

Johngenx, cars in alberta do not need an inspection done. The only time a car needs to be inspected, is if it comes from outside the province. Insurance companies MAY ask to have a car that is 10 or more years old to be inspected.
