for instance,

Canada:  honda accord dx manual = $24,300CND
USA:     honda accord dx manual = $19,434CND
        (16,195USD X 1.2exchange rate = 19,434)

would it be better to buy in the states and bring it up here?

The Canadian Dollars has gone through the roof, thats why.

1 year ago it would have been CHEAPER to buy in Canada,
16,195USDx1.58exchange rate = $25588

It has to do with exchange rates, and what the market can support.  Cars in the states are USUALLY more expensive because Americans have more money.  Currently a lot of Canadian cars are cheaper because of our dollar.

There are many difficulties with buying a new vehicle in the USA.  Often, automakers restrict their dealers to selling only to residents of the country they are selling in.  Then there's a matter of the importation paperwork and taxes due at the border.  And that is only after you have certificates to prove the vehicle meets all Canadian regulations.  I believe the car must also then be fitted with daytime running lights to comply with Canadian codes.  There could well be more to the importation than that.  Who knows what savings, if any remain after all that.

Other than that, knock yourself out!

car companies do not price their cars on the currency spot market.  Pricing and currency decisions are done months in advance.
And they don't reprice during a model year generally.

The EU a couple of years ago was an interesting case of this. BMW started to price all cars FOB the factory for the whole of the EU regardless of local taxes...previously they had produced cars at different prices in different markets with, sometimes, marginally different specifications.

this caused a fuss until people got used to it. It showed up the variations in sales taxes quite dramatically.

Personally I think that the NA car market should have all cars for US,Can and Mexico all with the same specifications and priced identically in some currency, preferably one that is fairly stable against the US$   Then we'd see just how much we are being ripped off by taxes on taxes and the even more evil "delivery charge"

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Bumbum, one thing you should know about the U.S. Accord DX vs. the CDN model, theirs does not have A/C, Power Locks, Cruise Control, only 2 speakers and no keyless remote.

Also add 6% duty.

Some cars are cheaper, like I stated the S2000 is about $10,000 cheaper.

Jamesbe - have you looked into the price of the Corvette by any chance to see what happens if one were bought there?

This could be fun. Maybe the new Mustang - supply problems aside, might be a good deal over the border as well.

I'm not sure about the 22K cheaper.
US C6 starts at 44295
CDN C6 starts at 67395
Exchange rate used is 1.20
Difference of about 14K before any importing fees/taxes.  Am I missing something here?

How is the 22K derived?

I was going with 75K that's what the C6 is selling for here right now.  And the other calculation based on the Z06.  Your right C6 probably less difference

thanx guys!

looks like it's a hassle with duty and converting to canadian specs.  is the accord made in the US?  if so, is there a chance we'll see a benefit of a stronger canadian dollar?

maybe i'm too hopeful.

why dont US and canada make bumpers to only 1 spec?

i believe that americans automakers sometime make stuff slowly on-purpose just to increase the demand. personally i couldnt care less about that because im most likely NEVER going to pay anything over msrp
