Car to scrap?
« on: November 11, 2004, 07:24:40 pm »
I've come to the conclusion that my old 1989 is nearing the end. The paint is bad, engine burns my antifreeze, a lot of smoke comes out of the muffler....

How much can I get for it at a scrap yard?

Thanks guys!

LOL - asking car enthusiasts how much it's worth as scrap is a bit backwards. We like to get the best and then make them better. Why not call your local scrap dealer in the yellow pages or some charities take them away for the scrap value so you don't have to fool with it. I bet no one on here has any idea of the scrap value of a car. Guess it's by the pound - so the bigger the better. Good luck.

The wreckers in the London area pay around $70. to $100. if you can drive it in. I hear around $35. if it dosen't run at all and they pick it up.

Mike, if it were not for the head gasket leak would you still drive it?

Thanks for your answers guys!

I can still drive it but I have to put in antifreeze  every time + it smokes a lot in the back. Somebody wanted to buy it for 500$ but no signs of him yet, I guess he changed his mind.

Yards in my area give about 1.5 cents per pound for non-runners, meaning about $40-$50 for most cars.  They go on a case by case basis for running cars, but $100 is typical.
No place I'd rather be...

I'd donate it and get a tax receipt.  That would be worth more to me than the few bucks you get out of it.

So I guess I was wrong - lots of posters here know the scrap value of cars. I'm amazed!! This site is such a fountain of new knowledge (seriously).

Mike, there is a product called "Irontite".  Sold at "Car Quest" auto parts stores.  It's a liquid, 16 oz. bottle.

I have used this product many times on blown head gaskets were motor anti-freeze is leaking either inside the motor or outside of the head.

Make sure engine is warm (not hot), open rad cap if you got one and pour it all in.  Make sure you got enough room for the entire bottle.  Run for 5 minutes.  After that time you will know if it works on your particular problem.

Make sure your heater is turned off first.

That's a good idea Articsteve but I don't have a credit card to buy the product. If CAN Tire sold it I would of tried it for sure.

I'm tired of putting $$$ into that damn car.

I know the feeling.  Last year a melted a head gasket on a 4.0 litre jeep cheroke and I think the bottle was around $16.00

I don't understand your credit card comment.  It's available at car quest auto part stores for sure.
