i'm looking at a bunch of new cars (subaru impreza, volks jetta 1.8t, mazda 3) and i decided  to throw in a used A4 in the mix. the impreza rs has been on the top of the list because of the handling, power, and awd. but i dislike the interior quality, the overall styling and the lack of solidity (like the thin metal used in the doors). they should not be on a $28 000 ride. that's where i imagine an A4 would clean up. what is the reliablitiy like on a 2002 a4 1.8t?

I have an '04 A4 1.8T and the quality (6 months into ownership now) has been 100% perfect.  Having said that, I doubt at the end of the lease in 4 years when the warranty's up that I'd buy the car out, even though I fully intend to maintain the car to a T.  There have been enough hiccups in Audi's past that I'd always be worried of the huge parts and maintenance costs.

The A4 is a beautiful car both inside and out.  It's smooth, quiet and great to drive all round and I'm very happy with mine (just wish it had more power of course, but what 'car guy' wouldn't?)

In my humble opinion, it's worth buying used BMW's and Audi's from their respective dealerships under their respective used-car plans (ie. Audi Assured or BMW Certified Series).  The interest rates are usually much better than you'd get through a bank and you're given the peace of mind of a fairly thorough warranty.  You'll pay a bit more than a private sale (or from another dealership), but it's money well spent.

Good luck!

why buy a used Audi when u can lease a brand new one  for the same cost? And u get warranty to boot.

True enough.  Dirt cheap for even '05s already!  If you're anywhere near Oakville, drop me an email and I'll give you the name of the guy who worked miracles for me.  Made my Audi come in at Honda Accord costs.  :-)

Yo Jeffy:

I think I'll take you up on that offer when I'm in the market for a new one.  :-)

Thanks guys for all the feedback. after speaking with quite a few people about used 2002 and 2003 audi's, the general consensus has been that if it is a bit of a stretch to afford the car - which it would be for me - then it might not be worth it as maintenance (routine or otherwise) could be very costly, especially on the 2002, which was the first year of the new body style. even my 98 jetta, bought new, had very pricey parts. this could end up being the deal-breaker. as for leasing a new one, i think i'd prefer to finance and buy than to lease and be left without a car after 3 or 4 years, although if the lease deals on new audi's are as good as Jeff1 and Ghost say, i might have to take a look anyway. also, many thanks for the offer Jeff1 but i'm in montreal.

Yeah, Blackgrandma, I think it's going to stick.  Just one of those things.  I even see 'grandma' when I look at your name, even though you've clearly spelled 'grand am.'

Too funny...
