$28400 before taxes?! Cloth and 5-speed?! I think that is way over priced.

Oops. Thanks Mdxtasy. Next time I'll read the posts more carefully.

The 'out the door' comment seems to suggest it's all taxes in.

Who said my Golf TDI wasn't a good value at 29000$ taxes in? Take out the extra accessories (PhatBox, window tint, bug deflector) and it comes down to about 27800$ out of the door... Compared to a Mazda3 well loaded, it's not too shabby I think.

agree......and it also makes my 05 Accord DX look like a steal at $27500 out the door!!!...although less equipped than Shnak's Golf or Mazda3 GT

Good point Simon…..The Honda Accord DX should be considered in this price range and is a worthy competitor….if not the clear choice.

Only reason I didn't go for an Accord for similar money than my Golf is because I feel the Accord is more a family car than my current situation. If I had been 3-4 years older, and closer to having kids, it would've been very tough not to get an Accord sedan 4-cyl. But right now, I wanted something sportier. And no, I'm not claming my Golf is sporty... I'm sure saying that it is sportIER.

The Accord DX is a fine automobile. However, I don't think I would buy it. For that price, I'd rather get a Mazda6 GS I-4. The Accords are expensive in this segment but then again, it gives you no problems and very good on gas.

Snowman, I know that the Accord Coupe is sportier and is a very fine automobile... I test drove a coupe 4-cyl 5-speed a while ago and man is that engine smooth! But I absolutely wanted 4 doors... and I feel that looks and performance wise, the Accord sedan isn't that sporty. Not that I want a race car, but you know... after enduring a CR-V for a little bit more than a year, I figured I'd get something a little sporty before having to switch to minivans and bigger cars.

Why didn't you choose the Mazda6 then? It's a great car for around 25K.

Matrix didn't interest me... doesn't feel too solid, or planted on the road, like my Golf does. Plus, that interior is horrible. I hate that Pontiac interior. Solid mecanic though, no doubt about it. As for the Mazda6, sure it's a nice vehicle, but way too small. I couldn't even sit in it comfortably.

When you in a Golf TDI....there really isn't much for it to compete with.  The new A3 and 1 series will be interesting competition for the Golf.  You want a hatchback and 4 doors?  Toyota Echo, Suzuki Aerio, Ford Focus, Chevy Aveo.

Shnak, are you saying the interior of a Golf is bigger than the interior of the Mazda6?

I have a very good driving position in the Golf with about an inch of free space over my head, so no hair brushing in the Golf. In the Mazda6, I couldn't even lower the seat enough to fit comfortably... my hair would more than brush the ceiling, and I needed to recline my seat to insanely uncomfortable levels. Mazda6 is definitely not a car for me...

I see...Shnak, you must be tall . Guess the Golf isn't as small as it looks.
