Good price for an '04 Golf GLS TDI?
« on: October 28, 2004, 06:34:06 pm »
I know there's some folks in here who can help...

I'm wondering what's the best price I'm gonna get on an:

'04 Golf TDI GLS, 5sp, no lux pkg, no side curtains, no ESP.

I'll probably add some tint and maybe a phatBox - but I want to make sure I have the best price as a starting point.

Tks!   Kris

I'd try to find one for about $27000 out the door taxes and everything included.  That's about $2500 off msrp.

hmm '04 Golf TDI GLS, 5sp, tinted windows and phatbox... reflex silver I bet? Are you about to steal my car or something??

Mine was a demo with 3600km, including a rebate for that, plus grad rebate, I got mine for about 26000$+tx. That includes a bug deflector, phatbox and tinted windows, all installed of course. Without those items, I believe it would've costed me about 24500$, which I believe is about 1500$ lower than the MSRP.

Onearmed, if you can find a Golf TDI GLS at 2500$ off msrp, let me know where! I was under the impression that I got a pretty good deal as the salesguy didn't want to buldge one bit lower. Then again, maybe I simply didn't deal as good as I thought I did. His main arguments is that TDI models are a lot easier to sell, they fly off the lot really quickly, and that they keep their resale value a lot better than gazoline models.

Awdriver, after thinking about it, would you be interested in purchasing my car and taking over my car payments? I absolutely love the car, but I'm starting to realize how tight I am right now to make the payments and I'm starting to think that leasing something cheap for a few years would've been a better idea.

In any case, if you're somewhat intrigued by this possibility, send me an email at andrelarocque@gmail.com and we'll discuss about it. Thanks!

Man, I had no idea a Golf costed so much. You can actually get a base Jetta or something. Is it worth it though? Does it feel that expensive?

Why buy a used car with a facked up drivers seat, I would offer no more then $21000. for a used car that cost only $25,000. Somebody's got to take the depreciation and it shouldn't be the buyer that pays for it.

Thanks Mdxtasy. I had been to that thread and posted. Didn't know such an active discussion was going on after that. Gotta a lot of reading to do.

Yes you do....I guess there's a few people here who have an opinion on VW.  Good discussion there.

Barrie...that's funny.  :-)

I may be off, but it's a good number to shoot for ($2500 off msrp).  I don't know the situation with TDIs, but when I bought my car (2003 GTI), I bought it on oct 2nd, 2002.  At that time I got $1500 off msrp, I figure it's an even older model now, end of model year, you should be able to knock another $1000 off $1500.  I know I was getting about $2500 if I wanted a 2002 GTI model at the time.  This is 2 years ago as well, I'm sure there are more hidden incentives somewhere.

Just a thought.

Winston, This is for a golf GLS not a GL or CL (lower models).  Second it's for a TDI not the 2.0L gas engine, hence the higher price.  For example a base golf CL is about $19999 msrp.

Onearmed, you'd be surprised how VW dealers DO NOT WANT TO BARGAIN with you! At least, the one here in Gatineau doesn't.

And Barry, my seat is just fine, thank you. It's my back that isn't fine...

And to those saying the Golf GLS TDI is expensive, have a loot at its list of features compared to other cars... ABS, discs brakes, side air bags, 8 speakers speakers, pollen filter, brake wear indicators, full size spare, heates seats, heated winshield washer nozzles, heated mirrors, etc. Many of those features aren't even available in competitors!

Well...    been busy so I didn't get back to check the thread til now!

I'm acutally seeing some pretty good discounts - dealer has cut the car to "cost", Plus I get $1000 loyalty - plus $750 for accepting the crappy 6.72% lease rate (grrrrr).  Selling price before options is $22300.  Now the additions:  299 admin fee, 100 air, 70 lein reg.  So it sounds like a reasonable deal then.

Now to catch up...  Is a golf TDI worth $25k?  Well   if you change the engine, seats, remove 2 doors, and call it a GTI, it's worth 31k!  In a TDI, it's a cut above anything else, In a gas model - there's some close competition (IMO, Impreza and Mazda 3).  Anyone questioning the value of one has probably never driven one - and probably never compared the cost of driving the TDI vs. any other gas powered vehicle.

Jetta is a bit more expensive than a similar Golf ($1500 or something like that) - but there is very little difference - subtle things here and there are a bit nicer on the Jetta (air vents, truck interior, possibly the seat fabric - although I'm not sure there is a cost difference in the two)

TDI models are much easier to sell - but that doesn't mean that you can't get a deal.  But I bet you'd get a better deal on a gas model. VW already offers better incentives and rates on gas models - many dealerships still have new '03 models in stock.  Not likely TDI's though.

Interesting note...  Before buying my Legacy in Jan this year - I "flirted" with VW - and found them unwilling to deal - couldn't even come close to the offer I was getting from Subaru.  Now - 2 dealers are practically begging me to get the golf.

Shnak - To be honest - your car is basically exaclty the same as what I'm considering...  Always wanted Silver.  But I think you should keep it.   I had the same "change of heart" after a short period in my Wolfsburg and paniced a bit.  I'm certainly glad I kept the car!
So - is the phatbox worth it?

Well my car is awesome, I love it a lot and if I wasn't so tight right now, I certainly wouldn't even consider selling it! But right now, in my current situation, my payment is a little bit big... so if there's an oportunity of selling it without losing too much out of it, I'd think long and hard about it!

There has to be a way for someone else to simply "takeover" my contract with VW Finance, right? Btw, I'm at 5 years @ 3.9% which is pretty good.

As for the phatbox, it's totally worth the ~700$ I paid for it! It works really well, sounds great, is VERY responsive (never lags, which surprised me a lot!). Most surprising to me is how easy to browse simply using a few buttons on the radio without seeing anything other than numbers. The voice browsing works great and helps a lot.

As I said earlier, my ONLY complaint about the PhatBox is that it doesn't display any text on the radio unit, but that can't really be blamed on the phatnoise dudes... VWs head unit is probably the limitation here.

So Awdriver, I'd seriously consider "selling" you my Golf if you're interested. Contact me if you want and we'll talk a little bit about what could be done.

You can get somebody to assume your lease.  They need to be approved by the VW financing arm and you transfer it over....but you have to find the sucker to do it.  If you put some money down on the car, then somebody might be inclined to take it over without having to fork over any money to you....but if you put nothing into the lease, I'd say they'd probably go and get a new one from VW instead of yours.  :-)

Friend works at a large VW Audi dealer in the GTA.

He's been selling cars at an absolute steal. Can you imagine somewhere around $7,000 off a 'new' new Beetle Convertible with HIDs (a $810 option)? Came to some $27,500+ tax. Heck, at that I'd be interested!

The GTIs were dynamite deals in the first half of the year. A few thousand off. If I didn't drive so much, I was thinking of getting one!

TDIs are harder to get a deal on, but I would think the $2,500-$3,500 is not unheard of, especially with your VW Loyalty incentive.

Can ask my friend tonight when I see him. Kind of curious, but yes, deals can be had.

Well, I know a comparable Jetta will definitely cost more than the comparable Golf. I guess they really feel good and classy when you drive them. This is the only reason that I can think of for you guys to like your VW's so much. O yea, and the part where you save money on fuel costs. (TDI)

VW's certainly do have a classy feel - and once you're inside, a golf and jetta are virtually the same "feel".  To me - the front end of the golf looks a little classy and a little more economy.  Could be why folks are surprised by the sticker!

I still prefer the Jetta's looks to the Golf - but having had a Jetta for 4 years - I just don't want another that looks exacly the same!

I've been following the VeeDubya thread and agree that the current product is past it's prime and needs a refersh to keep guys like me in the camp.  If I could move into a Golf V or Jetta V right now - I wouldn't even be looking at other makes.

The thing that might keep me in a VW is the TDI engine.  Having the 1.8t now - I've grown to hate the frequent $50 fillups with supreme.

The other features of the current cars are still great but - of course - I'm quite accustomed to them now so they really arent selling me anymore.

Snack if you are talking to Me at least learn how to spell my Name right. You might need glass's as my name is right in front of you. Do you expect to walk away from a New used Car and get away withouut paying anything. It dosen't quite work that way. Have you learned anything yet here?
