List of Used Car Sales Fees
« on: October 23, 2004, 11:04:11 am »
Hi,

I am in the process of buying a used vehicle (2000 Civic SI), but am not familiar with what kind of fees/taxes the purchaser is *expected* to pay (as opposed to say buying a new car).

i.e. Does the purchaser pay sales tax on the purchase price of a Used vehicle... or is that only applicable when the vehicle is NEW?

Also... what are typical fees expected to be paid by the purchaser of a used vehicle (and what kind of fees are considered *scams* or are negotiable)?

Any help would be much appreciated,

-Tom

Welcome to the Forum, Tom. First of all this topic has been discussed many times on this site so a search by you of the past threads would be a good first step. Secondly, we need to know which province or state you live in as there are different rules.

Buy one in the private market.  No fees other than 8% sales tax on the value stated in the Ontario government car package.

If your thinking of financing a Civic, just go get a new one with Honda low rates for 5 years.  They are probably back to 3.8

I think that was if you buy used privately.  I would expect a dealer to charge GST even on used vehicles (though I can't say for certain).

If you buy from a dealer, you pay GST and PST. If you buy privately, you do NOT pay GST; but you still pay PST when you register it w the province for plates.

Is it unusual for a dealer to slap you with a $700 dealer adminstrative fee for a used car?

Can we define Dealer Administrative fee as Extra Profit?

That's high.  No way should the admin fee be that high.  Maybe $150 max.  Whatever dealer you are trying to work with is trying to hose you.  Ask them what that $700 covers.....

Smells ripe. Jog my memory, don't you guys in Ontario have get a safety & emission test when you purchase a used vehicle? Not that a 2000 MY car shouldn't pass one, just curious that's all.

$700 sounds high. Around here $199-$299 is the norm. By chance, are you financing through a sub-prime lender? Some of them have fees up to $450 in addition to the dealer's regular fee.

$700. is beyond anything that sounds right at all in Ont. We have the safety check for around $69.95 and the E-test for around $40.00. Even the e-test is in the 401 coridor only. Something is wrong with this dealers's prices.
