New ford freestyle
« on: October 22, 2004, 12:16:27 pm »
Hi all, I've read some of the topics here and decided to register. We used this site a lot for the tests to assist us in our search and decision on a new family car. We have been testdriving suv's for the past 2 weeks.

We decided to go for the new crossover from Ford and are actually picking it up this evening at the dealer. We can't wait.

I've never owned a Ford before so I took a bit of a change. My European background on cars had some influence in our decision. The invoice price and the fact that the freestyle is based on the P2 volvo platform and that it has it's haldex awd system plus the CVT trans from ZF kind of won me over. We have been looking at the Volvo xc90 aswel, but the price for a T6 was out of our league. Other suv's that we testdrove were vw touareg, pathfinder 05, Jeep grand cherokee 05, explorer, durango.

My first question for fellow freestyle owners is if they know where to get a cargo liner. We have 2 dogs so the cargo area is a bit of a concern.

If you have questions about the freestyle I will be happy to answer them.

I'm poor so I bought some indoor/outdoor carpet (dark grey) and cut it to fit the cargo area of my Cherokee.  I'm sure a cargo liner should be available from the dealer soon enough.

Dutch - welcome to the Forum. Congrats on your new crossover - Freestyle. I think the looks and the paper stats on this vehicle are quite good so will be interested to here about it in detail as you drive it. Can't help you with the cargo liner query, although I would think Ford would make these accessories. If not, there are places that do. Compared to what else you looked at, I would think the Freestyle was pretty good value for the dollars. I doubt if and (few) of the others would be as inexpensive. Enjoy your new ride and pictures are always appreciated on here - particularily with a new model like yours.

thanks for welcoming me.

Mrthompson, if I can't get a pre-made liner I might just have to follow your advise. But I agree with ovr50 that Ford will supply a full accessories line for this new model. It's just that it is not available yet, so I was looking for an alternative supplier.

I will certainly post some pictures soon and more details on how the day-to-day use of the car is like.

Try doing a web search for "Husky", "Highland" and "Catch-All". They are the most often mentioned brands for floor mats and cargo liners.

Cabelas in the US carry all three brands.

Is there an automotive accessories store in your area, such as "Van & Truck World"?  You might be able to find something at one such store.

Welcome to the Forum DutchCanadian, and nice choice of auto.
Being a P2 platform vehicle driver, I am very curious on your feedback.Which model did you chose?

Ford is not too good at offering simple accessories such as cargo liners etc.
Maybe in a year or two they will have these items.
Reason I say this is when I got MY2002 Focus, I asked for winter mats, but Ford did not offer them, but about a year later the mats where available.

Makes me think the consumers here do not demand these items from the mfgs, hence the mfgs do not offer them. Its a shame really, as it is very important to me to have mats and liners that are made especially for that certain model.
Come on GM, Ford, and DC don't you know there are monies to be made on these small items!!

Enjoy your new wheels!!

Pick up a Car & Driver or Motor Trend and in there you will see the Weather Tech mats. They are out of the US but they have a Canadian web site
http://www.weathertechcanada.com

They may already have them.

Welcome to the forum. Interesting choice. I think you may be the only freestyle owner on this board so far. I would also like to hear impressions of the P2 platform and how she handles. Also, any details such as colour, options etc would be nice! Like Ovr said, we all appreciate pics of peoples cars, regardless of what the car is. Enjoy your freestyle!

Compared to the other models you compared, think the Freestyle is the most car/wagon-like. Offers lots of versatility and looks like an interesting package :-)

Be sure to post some photos and impressions!

If not now, someone has to offer the cargo mat. I've seen that spread ad in car magazines as well that Inco mentions. Looks reputable.

Europeans offer all sorts of accessories for the car and 'lifestyle' items for the driver. Those brands are generally good at allowing North Americans access to it, but there's still lots that's available elsewhere (or higher quality stuff) that's simply unavailable here. And as for N American and even Japanese brands, only the basics are brought to market - and even that seems to be an afterthought. Since when is a 'sunroof deflector', 'splash guards', or 'block heater' the end-all and be-all of accessories? I've ordered tonnes 'o good stuff over time from BMW, VW, Audi, Toyota, Honda, Saab, and Pontiac.

Enjoy the Freestyle (whoa, I almost typed 'Freestar' - that'd be a bo-boo) and don't just pick it up and drive straight on back to park it in the driveway... take the extra long route home for me!
AQUAMAN64 also posts on BDFD.com!

thanks all for your replies!

We just came home from the dealer with our new pride. My wife and kids drove it home while I was following with my Jeep.... Gosh I felt so proud just be looking at that picture driving in front of me.

I will make real pictures tomorrow and post them, but here are some of the details on our Freestyle.

Engine: 3.0 L v6 CVT AWD Limited
Exterior: Dark Shadow Grey Clearcoat Metallic
interior: Black /leather
options: rear dvd entertainment system
All the rest of the goodies come with the limited package ;-)

The puddle lights in the mirrors give a very rich glow to the car in the dark. That's just one thought in my head right now. Too much impressions to begin I think.

I'm going for a long drive tomorrow, but first I will go over the quides and stuff to learn every detail of the car.

I will also follow the leads you've been giving me on the cargo liner.

Nice to share this here.  thanks!

I read an article this week from Ford stating that Ford will increase production #s on the Freestyle as pre orders are higher than the FiveHundred.
Fords intial production was 60% FiveHundred,40%
Freestyle production, but has changed to a 50/50
split in productin #s.

Dutch - thanks for the pix. Looks really good. I particularly like the centre stack and the dash in the driver's chair.

This is definitely a car that looks much better in person than in publicity pictures. Until I'd seen one in person I was kind of lukewarm toward what I'd seen in pics. I think that explains why Freestyle production numbers have been increased - dealers are actually seeing how good these things look and are anticipating more sales.

Neat rig.  I'm a fan - the 3.0 V6 is a bit of a dissappointment though

Congrats DC….nice ride. I seen a few freestyle’s parked at Cambrian Ford here in Sudbury. I was there inquiring about the arrival of the Mustangs…not until November. I checked out the Freestyle and Five Hundred while there…..Welcome to Canadian Driver.
