Subaru Baja

Saw my first one today.  And, since I'm not on Scoob's mailing list for what's coming up, I almost drove off the road staring at it.  Luckily, I was only doing 60 km/h.

Certainly eye-catching and very unique-looking.  I thought I was hallucinating.

Yep, the Baja is like taking bad drugs!! You see weird things. Like the Baja itself. I heard that Subaru was not selling many of them and one can see why. Reminds me of the older Brat that they did. Some one must have bought them, as there are a few on the road here also.

Yep - looks like a Forester that went through a very destructive car wash...

I don't understand the rationale.  I really don't.  Unless the buyer needs to haul very, very small fridges for a living.

EL CASCOOBOH!  (Does anyone get that?)

Barrie:  I drink too much.  My last urine test had an olive in it (Rodney Dangerfield).

Kidding.  I was perferctly sober, ossifer.  Jist on me way home from work.

Ovr50 -

Brad Pitt, in the movie "The Mexican," buys himself an El Camino.  When he first sets eyes on it, he says admiringly, and with a throaty purr, "Elll Cahminooooh."  Then, throughout the movie, anytime anyone notices his car, they all say the same thing, the exact same way.  Kind of a running joke throughout the movie, made funnier by the fact that the car is butt-ugly.

For me Subaru is trying to sell it in the wrong market...here are some famous small pick-ups that make lot of success in latin america:

I don’t understand the purpose for this vehicle. I also think the styling is questionable and wonder how many they actually sell. There is a banana yellow one that has sat on the lot here in Sudbury all summer.

generally they sell this kind of car for young couples with no kids, a sport kind of like (mountain bike, jet-ski...etc) and in a small budget.
And in the end the answer is simple: $$$
Would u buy a toyo echo for 15K or a small pick-up for 10K? thats why they make lot of success...
maybe if subaru prices the baja correctly it will sell a lot of them...

Volume is very low, but they do sell. Someone around the corner from me owns a yellow one. I drove a Baja for a day last year and it drives exactly like an Outback, which is what you'd expect, but I think most people prefer their Outbacks to have a roof over the cargo bay. In the US they've sold less than 20,000 of them in the three years it's been on the market.

Personally, I like how the Baja looks. I certainly would pick a Baja over an WRX any day of the week. At least, it doesn't look like some 20 year old ricer punk modded it up to look "cool".

Jeez Shnak,

So you would pick an ugly (fairly useless as a pickup) Baja over a highly rated driver's car.

Umm, ok, whatever.

I don't like the look of the Baja. Doesn't look horrible, but the roofline doesn't make it look too good either. Actually, it's no so bad with the optional body-coloured bed caps (equal in height to the roof).

When the current gen Forester first came out I was doing an autocross/off road event for Subaru to introduce it to dealers and asked someone from the company what they thought of the then upcoming Baja, and I relayed my opinion (looked odd, surely wouldn't sell well, what's the rationale from your perspective?) and although he hesitated a bit, he did honestly think the thing would sell much better than it has been.

It's my understanding this is the last model year it'll be offered.

Rayt, am I not allowed to like how the Baja looks? And, I know the WRX is a highly rated driver's car... I never said anything against that... I only said that based on looks, I like the Baja a whole lot more simply because it doesn't look like some 20 years old civic ricer punk modded it to look "cool". That's all.

Instead the Baja looks like it was designed by committee.

Well I’m not twenty, nor a punk, and I don’t care if I look cool. The WRX makes me feel good and that is what counts.

That's how I perceive the WRX, sue me. And that's why I prefer the Baja's look. But I'm glad you perceive the WRX otherwise and it makes you feel good.
