New Engine

Just went through the Motor Trend SUV buyers guide and guess what - that 4750 pound two seater they call SSR now has a decent motor to go with it.

Yup - the new Corvette engine will be in it and pumping out 390 hp and 405 pound-feet of torque.

Makes you feel warm and fuzzy eh?

The rest of the car is still crap! I couldn't believe how everything felt cheap when they had one on display at an outdoors weekend the other day.

No wonder I have never seen one of those on the road... stupid product that should've stayed a concept car...

I drove one for a short while.

Didn't mind it, but man, did it ever roar for the amount of acceration I got. The Vette engine is a welcome upgrade.

The interior design was retro-pleasant, and the cargo bed holds more than any sports car. Didn't find it overly cheap, but it didn't seem as solid over expansion joints et all. The heft can be felt motoring around too, so it's not much fun beyond a looker and a cruiser, unless there was lots more usable power.

I think the $70,000 price from the Chevy store has a bit more to do with why there aren't more.

The power top worked really well tho. The best design and functional element by far!

Would anybody with a $70k budget actually pick this truck over a Vette?

Yes some people will and have as there are a no. of them on the Roads around London. They are a Cruiser and not meant for racing at all. The new Vette engine will help it out a lot as the 1st engine is a little underpowered. It is not built for everybody but will continue to be a limited model. Some of our Posters will call it Cheap and stupid but what do they know besides, "Nothing" about to-days Vehicles. They have no experience but know it all.

I've only seen one on the roads so far.  A purple one.  I'd say a big chunk of that 70K pricetag goes to that trick roof.  While it's not a racer, it looks cool.  It's the Prowler for Chevy....but with a bigger trunk.

But I'd still take the Corvette over the SSR anyday. I'm pretty sure you guys will too. Right?

id pick the dodge ram srt-10 any day of the week over a sports car like the vette

why exactly? i dont know. i saw this kit car from factory five that uses the C5 vette parts to form it. if i was to build that kit car, i would get the vette hands down. for practicality purposes i would get the ram srt-10
The most wanted cars of my uber uber list
4th generation supra with twin turbo which is the most affordable/practical on the list
If i had all the money in the world, i would buy an army of Supras and crash them into the tree stumps

Guy I work with, age early 60's, has a yellow SSR, and there's another yellow one around here as well. So yes, some people with $70k to spend would choose it over a Corvette. I don't think it looks or feels like a $70k vehicle either, but seeing the roof in action is very cool.

SSR vs Corvette?? No contest for me - Corvette any day by miles. Even if the Corvette were $20k more money.

I think I would go the Vette myself as it is the faster of the 2 vehicles and will probably hold its value better as well over the long run. Still too early to buy the SSR as it is only the 2nd year. I always wait until the 3rd year to buy a new toy, gives them time to get the bugs out.

What's all this talk of $70k for an SSR? That would be a salesman's dream come true. Reality is that these things may have an MSRP of 70k but can be had for $50k any day of the week.

The SSR doesn't appeal to me like the Corvette does.  It's a hands down Corvette from this camp.

The irony of this move is that it will now put the Corvette and the SSR in a similar price bracket. In the paper yesterday a new 05 Vette is going for $64 grand.

This isn't even something any real car guy is going to think about - the Corvette is 10,000 times better.

Now if the SSR went on a diet and dropped the price down to $50 as Sterling implies they sell for anyway, then it might find more appeal.

But if not - GM has found a new way to spell Edsel.

The stodginess of GM has come out and even tho they don't have it right just yet the SSR is a Nich Vehicle like a lot of others. I am still waiting to see the re-birth of the 55 Chevie that they are bringing out. The SSR is only 1 of a NO. of Toys GM is going to bring out in the next few years.

I'm glad GM is coming out with some funky stuff now... I just hope that they ensure they look cool or agressive or something.  The SSR to me looks effeminate... soft.
I'd have gone with something more mennacing.  But then, I'm no designer and I've certainly not got $50-70 to spend on that kind of vehicle!
