Hi all,

I’m new here, and I’m hoping someone could help me with my quandary. I’m in the process of negotiating a deal to buy a car that has been driven by someone from New York. The car is still under a U.S. title in the seller’s name. Can someone elaborate the procedure that one has to go through to get the title transferred.

Also, since I am going to be financing this car through my bank, they want a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) which has among other things, a vehicle background check for outstanding liens and a sale agreement. However, since this car was never registered in Ontario, I suspect that the UVIP would not be available. What should I do in this situation.

Please help.

Ciao.

Hi Manchap:

You are right that the UVIP would be of no use to your bank in this situation, the New York Certificate of Title would (it shows if there are liens right on the face of it).

However, we are getting a little ahead of ourselves because the first thing that must be done is to have this vehicle imported into Ontario in the proper fashion.  You need to call:

The Registrar of Imported Vehicles @ 1-888-848-8240 to begin this process.

Hope this helps.

That's a great site.

I'm investigating in potentially importing a Scion xB. Thanks!
