What to buy for $16K
« on: October 13, 2004, 04:14:38 pm »
I am looking for another car as I just sold my CRX and am looking to collect some of your thoughts and suggestions for something else.

The guidelines for the car is that it should have 4 doors, good handling, decent acceleration yet good fuel economy, manual, reliable as I plan on keeping it for at least 6 years, less than 100k's, nice looks, and all for a max of $16K.  Any suggestions?

I'll throw out the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Mazda Protege/Protege5, Honda Civic/Acura EL, Subaru Impreza Outback Sport.  There should be a lot of choices but I would tend to lean towards the Civic, Accord, or Protege.

The Dodge dealer down the road has a 2003 Protege LX 2.0 for $12K.  Cheap, good car.  I see lots of them under $14K that are nearly new.
No place I'd rather be...

Ok - this is totally shameless - but I say - buy my Jetta!  Think of the contryside you could see driving it home from halifax.

;-)

There are some awesome choices in that price range - I'd go Honda/Acura - Subie - or VW (TDI or 1.8t)
Current: 2011 Audi A4 Quattro 2.0T; 2010 VW Tiguan Premium
Past: '08 A3 2.0T, '06 Jetta TDI, '04 Golf TDI, '03 Legacy, '01 Jetta 1.8T, '97 Acura EL

Could you deliver the Jetta to Edmonton tomorrow?  Great!

I am leaning towards a Protoge ES as it has nice looking alloys and usually a sunroof.  What dealer did you see the 03 LX at, John?  I do see lots of LX's around, but not too many ES's or GT's and not for $16K.  The Toyota black book price for 02 Protoge's is $11, but all listed in the Autotrader are well over $16K.

I think a buddy of mine has a Protege he might be thinking of selling...he's in Calgary.

Sorry....it's been sold.  It was a silver Protege GT or ES I think.  Asking $14K.

The new Sunfire can be had for around $12000. with some nice options on it. Pocket the difference and drive a new car with full warranty. Thats my Suggestion.

St. Albert Dodge has a 2003 LX 2.0 with AC/AT and their asking price is $12,400.  It's that "sand" colour.

I just saw their ad in the Autotrader, but their qualifier is 'with any trade worth $3000 you can buy...'.  I really dislike this type sales technique.

Huh.  I called them about it, as I saw it driving by.  I've been thinking about selling the 'ol 626 and 190E and buying a newer Protege to be our "Mall Car."  The guy I talked to said the price was "reduced" to $12,400.  I was going to take a closer look at it, and if it's a good car, would offer them $11K and see what happens.  There's lots of Mazdas around.  $15K is a STUPID price for that car.  It's a base LX with AT/AC and NO other options.

He didn't say anything about a $3K trade, but knowing that, I would probably not deal with them.  That's a scumbag selling technique.

Nice ride, AW.  If only you lived in the great province of Alberta....

John, the prices of most 02 Protoges are at least $15, with the dealers asking more.  If that is what people are asking, I want to know what they are getting.  An 02 ES GT I looked at was asking 500 and got $16 (from someone else obviously).

Why not also look at an Acura 1.6/7EL?

They'd be a tad more fuel efficient, I would think.

Toyota Corolla S - yes, with those skirts :P Can't beat the mileage and power, really.

Go to Sundance and see Brian.  They ask HIGH money, but I bet they'll come down on those big posted prices.  I was down there a month or so ago and he figured I'd be able to get an 00-01 with good options and decent km's for about $10K with taxes.  We've bought a couple Mazda's from him, and in both instances, we got a very fair price.  As good as we could have done in the private market.

$15-16K for an 02?  I'd like to see someone getting that.  For a couple thou more, only a moron wouldn't take cheap financing and buy a new 3.  I'd bet that anyone asking $15K for an 02 Protege (not a P5) is not getting any play on the car, and if so, no offers over $12.5-13K.  Those were strong sellers and there's lots out there.  They also don't have the Civic or Corolla rep.  Personally, I think that an 01 is probably the best buy since I don't care about warranty and won't pay a dime for it.  I'm still humming and hawing (hawing?) on selling the bunch (190E, Subaru and 626) and buying my much-much-better half a new V50 AWD or Legacy GT.  If not, I'll ditch the 190E and 626 and buy an 00-02 Protege and keep the Subie.  I have the 190E sold, it's just not been picked up yet.  Now to find some poor soul to buy the 626...
