Dealer in Montreal is the leader so far, $1200 better than one in Ottawa (I was calling just before closing and had to leave vmail for the other in Ottawa).  If I go with him, how does it work?

I'm sure Quebec must have 10-day trip permits so I can drive it home.  Do I pay the TQV when I buy, then pay the PST when I register in Ontario, then apply for a rebate of the TQV?  It looks like that to me.

Are there any other peculiar wrinkles to this?  Buying in Ottawa might be worth a hundred or two to me to save the hassles, but not twelve hundred!  If this is the extent of the extra effort I'd be tempted to go with Montreal.  I'll probably give Ottawa another chance though.

Thanks!

well, you have to get an out of province inspection which CAN make it not worth your time, but thats only if the car needs major repairs(ie new muffler and such).  you can always try and negotiate a better selling price for ottawa, bring in an invoice or something of how much the dealer is offering from montreal, maybe the guys in ottawa will lower the price to match or come close to matching it. if its a few hundred it might not be worth the hassle of going to montreal and getting it, unless you plan to go there anyways

Interesting. I don't know what the law is but I suspect you can get a temp licence and then when you go back to Ottawa you pay the tax when you register the car.

That's a big price spread though and maybe too big to ignore, or could it be that the guy in Montreal is trying to lure you there with a lowball price and then beat you 'up' when you get there thinking you came that far and won't wan't to go home empty handed.

Interesing still and keep us posted.

Thanks, I will.  Going to Montreal not a problem, I'm here pretty regularly.

Worrying about what the dealer will do is why I questioned this price originally, it is (among other things) lower than the lowest I can offer with CarCostCanada's "take it or leave it" form.  The form allows me to offer as low as 2% over invoice, $99 for the paperwork, and the result is higher than the dealer is asking, even without the $99 to CCC if they get the price.

The car will be new so I'm not so worried about an inspection, and in fact yesterday (driving around Montreal) I noticed a few cars with what I assume is the 10-day trip permit (drove a car with one in Ontario for a friend years ago).  I found a Quebec govt form that says I can apply for a rebate of the 7.5% TVQ if the vehicle is not registered for more than 10 days in Quebec, again reinforcing the idea of a temporary permit.  http://www.revenu.gouv.qc.ca/documents/eng/formulaires/vd/vd-60-v(2002-01)d.pdf [note the link goes all the way to "pdf"]

I'm going to see if Westboro calls me back tomorrow (salesman didn't return my Friday vmail on Saturday) and I may give Ogilvie a chance to match.

Thanks again for the advice and I'll report back what happens.
