Do it yourself: Paint your Car/Truck
« on: October 09, 2004, 09:01:38 pm »
I want to re-paint my truck because the paint is starting to chip in a few spots... the only problem is that I don't want to pay someone 2000 bucks to do it. I want to do it myself. Is this possible? I know what I would need a spray gun, and an enclosed area(ie- garage) but where do I buy automobile paint from? is it expensive?

if anyone could give me as much info as possible on this that would be great...

thanks in advance
Bodin.

You might also need a "baking/heat area"? IMO, it's not something that you can do yourself without the proper training and equipment. I have never heard of anyone DYI painting a vehicle (but I'm certainly no expert).

Why "paint" your car when you can "Tremclad" it?

Bodin There is a lot of work to painting your car. The body has to be prepped and masked. All of the rust and damage repairs should be done 1st as well. You will need about $100. to $300. just for the paint. The sanding supplies will cost around another $100. If you are useing base coat clear coat then you definitely need a Bake oven as well. There is alot of work involved to this process. Places like UAP,PartsSource and other wholesale jobbers will have the paints involved.

From a firefighter's perspective, please don't do it in an "enclosed garage".
Professional paint booths have explosion proof electricals as well as efficient fans etc.-- otherwise things might just go BOOM!
Check with your insurance agent about your coverage if you paint your car in an unapproved garage--guess what the answer will be.
Only my opinion but personally I don't think its worth it.
But honey it isn't "just a car'"

Spend the money or find a buddy that does it for a living. It's an expensive procedure that's time consuming & requires a great deal of skill, knowledge of the different paints/thinners/hardeners & patience. The company my father works for paints they're own vehicles, a simple pickup typically takes anywhere from 4 days to weeks depending on the amount of work needed, not to mention specialized equipment & a proper paint booth. Also alot of these components are not only flammable but very toxic to humans if breathed in. Translation do not attempt this on your own. It would cost you far more than a proffesional & mostly your truck will still look terrible at best & very rust prone at worse.

Why not get a shop to paint it with bedliner and forget all the body preperation work? When my Dakota needs a repaint (12-15 year) I plan to use bedliner. At that point it is a beater anyway/.
