Windshield haze/fog/film
« on: October 03, 2004, 12:54:48 pm »
I have a weird haze/fog/film that suddenly has developed on the OUTSIDE of my windshield...It is only visible when it rains and it makes the outside seem like there is a weird fog, similar to what you would get on the inside...I have tried almost everything that I know...including scraping with a razor blade, vinegar and water, commercial window cleaners, new blades, mineral spirits, ect... nothing seems to fix it...Any help?

Welcome to the Forum Edutainment80, does your rad ever show that it is down a bit of fluid. Could be your heater core under the hood is slowly leaking fluid and it is coming up onto the windsheild. I have seen this happen on the inside of many cars and we just replace the heater core for it. Please tell a little more regarding the actual car, Make year and model with which engine please. The more we know helps us help you.

'95 accord, US LX, 4cyl engine,...no problems with the heater core that I know of...checked the fluid the other day when I changed my oil and seems to be fine...

Well it stumps me abit as the only other thing is something coming up off the road. If your windsheild has been coated with any type of oil or anti-freeze then I can understand the Haze but the only thing I can think is How old are your wiper Blades and in what condition.

Did you just go through a car wash?
Did you just fill up the washer fluid with either fluid with "rainX" or fluid with "teflon"

Any of those....

I agree with TPL.  The wax from a car wash usually makes the windshield "hazy" when it rains.  I wash the windshield with dishsoap to remove it and it clears up.

I replaced the blades on friday and it didn't help...I did just recently add washer fluid, Im really not sure if it had teflon on it but either way, how would I get it off?  Im really wondering how I strip whatever this is off...I just recently tried using just plain old dish detergent and it still doesn't help....help please

I wouldn't be useing Dish Soap on the car as it is harmful to the Wax on the car. It strips the wax off very quickly on any spots it comes in contact with. I suggest just useing Glass cleaner only on the windshield.

My thought is you are going to have to go and visit Speedy or Apple Auto Glass and they may have a solution. I know anti-freeze will do the exact thing you describe so that is why I suggested your Cooling system.

Sounds like someone might have topped up the washer fluid with antifreeze. Bet yah didn't know some diesel antifreezes are blue? And that some good hearted souls have a habit of making 2 jugs of fluid into one, sometimes without taking the time to read what written on the side of the bottle because "I always put my diesel antifreeze in that box that says washer fluid"? And yes this does have a history behind the trivia questions.

hmmm seems as though we have deviated from my original question of how to actually remove whatever film/haze this may be, but nonetheless, no I didn't add antifreeze to my washerfluid reservoir....

Ed,
Before you noticed this film had you been following a home heating oil truck by any chance?
Maybe were behind a truck loaded with asphalt?

The reason I'm asking this is because truckers who have to haul asphalt (usually hot) spray the box with DIESEL FUEL to prevent the asphalt from sticking to it.

You could try www.autopia.org (a detailing site)for their thoughts.  I was going to suggest Stoner's glass cleaner, as I have heard good things about it, although I've never seen it in stores.

I have a 2 step solution for you that I have used on my cars. First get kitchen cleaner "Vim" (cream) and clean your windshield with this using wet cloth. Do not rub on paint and rinse well after. Next buy windshield protector called "Rain-X". You rub this on and then buff it off. This will not only clean any film off your windows but also improve wiper performance. I am almost 100% sure this will clear things up. I do this to my car every spring and apply rain-x every few months.
