I'm in Toronto. How do I know if Toyota Camry 2002 I'm planning to buy is made in Japan?

If the VIN starts with a J it was made in Japan. If the VIN starts with a 1 it was made in Georgetown, Kentucky. Most Camrys for the North American market are US-made. |

Thank Bmorton. That's important to know. How about HONDA,NISSAN? The same rule? |

I believe the Maxima's for North America are made in Smyrna Tennessee. That's right. I said Smyrna.

How about "Made in Japan" identification? First letter in VIN. Bmorton said for Toyota if it's "J" then it's made in Japan. If it's "1" then it's US. Does this rule apply to HONDA ACCORD and NISSAN ALTIMA or NISSAN MAXIMA? Is it possible to buy a Japanese car in Toronto made in Japan? (Message edited by riga on September 22, 2004) |

It's the same for any manufacturer that builds in a particular country. Further reading that may interest you: http://www.autoinsurancetips.com/vin.htm |

Thang, Do you mean if you buy in Canada all Toyota Camry are made in Japan? They all have "JT..." in the VIN? |

Yes, Riga. My own less-than-Sherlock-Holmes-like powers of deductive reasoning have gleaned from Thang's post that if you buy a Camry in Canada it was made in Japan and the VIN would start "JT..." At the risk of muddying the picture for you, if you bought a Camry in the States, it would have been built in the States and the VIN would start "1T..." or "4T..." according to Thang's post and the link I provided. Sigh! |

Is there a particular reason why the origins of said Camry interests you? |

The reason is very simple. In my opinion any car that is built in Japan is better then the same car built in USA. |

I was going to ask the same question. The Camry quality has always been top notch and reliability has not been an issue. |

I doubt it. I am sure there are units out there from Japan, but they were probably only imported when there were issues to do with supply from the US plant. First character of the VIN in any car since about 1981 ALWAYS indicates the country of final assembly. Here's a very comprehensive list for decoding VINs: http://www.angelfire.com/ca/TORONTO/VIN/WMI.html#ccode |
