What is going to happen to Champ car with the impending sale of Jaguar and Cosworth? Both the IRL and Champ Car utilize Cosworth engines.  Any new owner would be eager to continue both. I guess that the existing engines could be used and the maintenance and parts could be contracted out.

What about the plans to expand Ford’s role as a sponsor by bringing sales divisions in Canada, Mexico and South America?. Will Ford be as eager to support a series that it no longer supplies in any real way?

I was wondering that, too.  But I haven't been able to find anything that addresses that concern.  Ford's only official statement was sadly lacking any clarity on their intentions re: Champcar.

If nobody steps up to buy Cosworth, what then??

Ford has said that it's North american racing programs are not being affected, and the release specifically mentioned Champcars and Nascar.

Champcar owns the engines, cosworth has a maintenance contract.  The Chevworth EArl engines are leased to the teams IIRC.

My personal unsubstantiated opinion (hope)  Ford will increase it's role in NA racing operations, with the retraction from WRC and F1.

Champcars reportedly inks deal with CBS for network broadcasts for 8 races in '05, with the balance shown on Speed.

$10 million dollar (time buy), with Ford Mo Co shouldering most of the cost, Champcar sells advertising to pay for it.  Ford get's discounted NFL slots as bonus.

Unconfirmed by CBS at this juncture.

Network TV is huge news.  Massive.

CCWS getting back on mainstream network TV will be a big boost for them.

I found the TV coverage to be terrible this year.  They production values were quite low...at least they were at the Vegas race.  I remember specifically thinking the sound being so poor that I could hardly hear the cars on the track.  Motorsports is a very visceral sport and broadcasters should be expending a lot of effort to bring that sense of speed and energy to the screen.  I don't think the broadcaster this year (OLN, Spike?) had any experience in this.

It's getting more and more official.

Calgary's tv-friendly mountainous backdrop and possible Stampede tie-ins will probably trump Edmonton's chances to host, but I won't mind either location.

Calgary needs a track, word is Edmonton would race at the Municipal Airport, which is in the middle of the city.  Airport tracks are pretty fun, and unique, ala Cleveland.

Sked is supposed to be out Oct 28.

Inco...I'm a dirty boy.  Worse yet, I prefer to do it over the internet.  Watch me dance. image

Calgary would most likely be a street course but I'm not sure where they would stage it....Edmonton and their free airport would be fun....perhaps they can alternate or something.

Free airport?
From what I've heard from those who travel there, the Muni is busier than ever except with small planes hopping to/from Calg, GP, Peace, etc etc.

Calgary would be fun... maybe they'd run it down Memorial drive... right by my place

Word today from a couple of sources is that the deal is done and Edmonton is the site.  There was a caller on a local sports call-in show here in Edmonton that said the race will be the weekend of July 17-19, 2005 at the City Centre Airport.  It was also mentioned on Primetime Sports on Fan590 by Bob Singleton (formerly of the Molson Indy Toronto, now invlolved with the Champcar race in San Jose, CA).  He also indicated that it would not be Molson signing on as a primary event sponsor.

Woohoo!!
