Question on Saturn SL1 and some general
« on: August 08, 2004, 01:52:38 am »
Hi.
Any thoughts on a 97 Saturn SL1. It's auto and 120000k for 7500 inc. GST.
Should I offer 6500 or 6750?
It's from a Saturn dealership and been inspected there, does it still need me to get it mechanically inspected do you think? It comes with all current service records.

They are not a bad car and the milage is very decent for the year. I wouldn't think you need to have it looked at for safety or service reasons as I am sure coming from a Dealer it will be in Good Certified Shape. Welcome to the Forum as well Flame On. I would offer low on the Car as you can always go up if you want to.

Flame_on,  be aware that Saturn's of that vintage are notorious for engine head failure and oil consumption.  I had a '96 that had to have the head replaced at 50 K (thankfully under warranty) and then again at about 190 K (at my cost, about $2K at an independent).

My son has the car now and it still soldiers on, though the oil has to be topped up between changes.  It has a timing chain, so at least you don't have to be concerned about whether the belt has been changed at 100 K.

Thanks guys those are helpful comments.  I'm also considering a Nissan 200sx with fewer k's on the odometer and more features.

It was the 95 & 96's that had head cracking problems single cam motors only{changeover year on engines, affected about 1% of vehicles built}. Oil burning due to stuck oil rings{cheaply fixed, dealer has a TSB on this}was common on all pre-99 Saturns. Check to make sure the fluid changes were done on the transaxle, these particular models had a habit of warping the valve bodies if the owner didn't keep up with the maintenance & they got overheated. When you take it for a test drive check to make sure the car doesn't delay engaging reverse. If it does bring this issue up with salesperson, you may be able to get a discount on the car. Not a serious problem that can be repaired, but one that will require a repair at a later date. To be a honest though in my area that's downright expensive, they're selling for between $4500-5000. My 2001 SL sold for $8000 through Moncton Saturn{they gave me $6000 on a trade}, that was a base 5spd & am/fm radio, 55,000kms.
