GMC Sierra problem...
« on: August 03, 2004, 09:48:23 pm »
Hy guys, it's my first thread! I own a GMC Sierra 1500 pick-up 1987, my "engine soon light" light interminatly and at the same time, it's like I lost two cylinders of power, motor is a 305 V-8 injection, the scanner at my local garage scan no code today even the "engine soon light" was on, yesterday, they cleaned the injectors and changed the oxygen sensor, we also changed (one months ago) the sparks plug, wires spark plug, rotor, distributor cap, the coil and the fuel pump, so, what can I do more, the garage guy cannot say where come from the problem, does another sensor can cause the problem or it is the PROM or the computer? I don't know because no codes on the scanner..., does any folks here can help me? Thank you!

It is very possible that one of the other sensors is starting to go. Finding which one is the problem, I would call around to find out who in your neighbourhood has the most experience on these engines. You have thrown enough money at this engine that should have found the problem by now but how many miles or klm's has the vehicle travelled since this was done before if ever.  Also Welcome to the Forum Peter42G.

Thanks for the info Mark! I bought a pick-up-coil today, this part is located under the rotor, two mechanics say to me that one wire of the old part can be break and cause the lack of power, so like I said, I replaced cap distributor and rotor one month ago but didn't know there was another parts there! The mechanic will replace the old pick-up coil on friday morning, maybe it will solve my problem, thank you to all.

They are a multi-peice coil and that certainly makes sense on this ehgine. Thats why the 2 Cylinders are dropping out. Bad Coil and or Both the wires as well. You have a good mechanic from the sound of it.

Hi guys, I'm back! My Sierra's problem wasn't the pick-up coil but this module was very dirty and corroded, the mechanic took a new reading with the scanner and finally found the code number 42, this code is for "Electronic Spark Timing (EST) Circuit", I order the part ($200 CDN), I'll install the new part next saturday. However, I saw a beauty at the Chevrolet'dealer yesterday, a GMC Sierra 2003 with 41,000 Km, the old owner have 73 years old and habitually change his vehicules each two years, this truck is like a brand new one, no smoking odor, hitch, bed liner, 4,3L Vortec, CD-radio, cruise, air, we took a ride and finally ask a loan to the Bank! We have to wait a few days for response.

The 4.3 has been around for years and is a well proven Engine. That is a nice Truck, I think you will enjoy it quite a bit. Please Post Pics when you get it.

Hi everyone!
I am considering the purchase of a 1/2 ton truck. I have my eye on a 2WD extra-cab GMC Sierra (1998)
It has 153000 on the 5L V-8, A/C, cruise etc.
What should I be wary of? What questions shpould I ask and is this a good product?
They are asking $9500 CDN, it needs tires a new instrument cluster as the display for the P/N/D section of the cluster is burned out ( $250 - $300 ) I am told to repalce.
It is the first truck for me in over a decade! Starting the hunting and fishing thing again after a mid-life time-out! :-)

Thanks for the input!
Cheers
Wheels in Ottawa.

Welcome Wheels to the Forum, these are a very solid truck for the money as long as the transmission has been serviced and the engine is quiet. This series had a small problem with a knock in the lower end on some of this model engine which did not interfer with its performance or reliability. The Price may be a bit high but with the repair on the dash completed it will be somewhat close. Not a bad truck at all which will serve you well for the next 5-6 years.
