The Febuary Edition of Automobile Magazine  is showing their new car ratings and the Mazda 3 is in 2nd spot on their winning ladder . They talked about how wonderful the standard tranny is and rated it the best ever. You definitely have a real problem if yours dosen't work as well as their comments on this product.

don't forget one thing. car that auto magazine/road&track/car&driver are getting for testing is carefully choosen by mazda (usa/cdn).
what real life is, usually gets published by J&D Power or similar publications.
Monday I am calling and setting new appointment with Windsor Mazda.
Now 3rd is getting bad.
And if tranny get damaged so much that replacement is needed, I am sure Windsor Mazda will try to blame it on me
We'll see

Anyone else had a tranny problem with their Mazda3...differential or similar...How does a differential become damaged anyway?

For the most part I would never visit these sites for fear of being bunched into a group of winers and complainers.  I am have been working on Mazda's for over 10 years.  I have seen some rather odd things happen on Mazda 3's this past year, but for the most part (excluding the air bag sensor recall and the t-stat bulletin's) ALL of our complaints have been produced by either lack of responsibility of their owners or of their children.  There HAVE been a few problems with the 3 in the past year, but hey this is just a teething problem of a new model (doesn't anyone remember how bad the rear disc brakes were on the '96 Prot? or maybe the fact that EVERY NEON head gasket leaked in the first year they were built).  For the most part the Mazda 3 has been a great car.  The main reason I am writing this little note is the fact that the dealership I work for was faxed a letter this week warning us of "ghost" shopers from a new agency in the Toronto area investigating dealership's 'ripping' off customers.  Personaly I'm tired of being looked at like I'm gonna rip YOU (the customer) off while your standing at the service counter, but expect that world as far as warrenty and time constraints.  A little bit of common curtosy will go a long way, understand that the person working on your car is trying to pay the bills just like you.  I'm not speaking for all my profession, but try to think a bit about the 'blue collar' worker who is trying to do his job in the back while you are using our customer phone in our waiting room to call "someone else" for prices and shopping us.  Think of it this way, when my mom used to get her car fixxed she used one garage and paid maybe 15-20% more then some other places...BUT when the big ticket item like a clutch or head gasket went they were more likly to help her.  Now today I have customers with Motormaster tires, walmart wipers, costco battery, went to green&ross for brakes and now is bitching to me because we won't help him with the water pump that is leaking at 82,000km...only 2,000km out of warrenty....too bad! your name is???

People Not every dealership is out to get you, and we didn't build that car to :censor: you off.

Good first post, Cosmo, and I think you have a valid point. I agree that ppl who go cheap on maintenance (or don't follow the schedule) and then yell at the dealership when something fails, have not got a leg to stand on. I'm amazed that even on this Forum, which is mostly car enthusists, so many say - "buy your tires (battery, oil, whatever) at Canadian Tire (WalMart, Costco, whatever)" I don't like wasting money either, but I believe that the products made for the vehicle are superior to the discounters off the shelf stuff. Just my opinion and others will disagree with me.

Welcome to the Forum... Time to duck as all the rotten tomatoes being throw this way by the WalMart/Costco/CanTire crew.

I went in to one of my Friends garages on this past Wed to pay a bill for a small repair on my car last week. Had to be done on a hoist and took about 45 minutes to do. I seen the owner who said "What Bill" the garage never made one up because you are a regular client here. I was Pleaseantly surprised needless to say but these people have owned the property for 59 years now so I think they are here to stay. A Honest Shop is always busy as word of mouth advertising is still the best.

Well Ovr,

I find Costco stocks many brand name products and are often a little cheaper than the competitors.  While house brand no name tires and batteries aren't the best and should not be put on your vehicle if it can be avoided...I would say a good Interstate battery from Canadian Tire is just as good as an Interstate battery from a local garage....or a set of BFG tires from Costco is just as good as Fountain Tire.  The only thing I say is avoid using the service departments from Canadian Tire and WalMart.  That is something you should not do if you care about your car.

Cosmo I tell many people who need to know what garages to do business with here in London. I have been in the trade on and off for over 50 Years this year. I do not believe in cheating anyone so I tell them the same thing. I only do business with Garages that own the property as they have to do a better job as they can't leave. This proves out every time.

Barrie,
The shop you mentioned must be a family oriented business like the one I deal with here. There has been a couple of times I thought something
'wasn't just quite right', and when I took the van in, the owner came out and had a look but said he wasn't sure but for me to wait until the next available hoist. One time it took a half hour wait and the second was like 5 min..
Both times when they brought the van back outside there were no charges. No urgent repairs needed or just a clamp needed tightening.
I, too have been a long time (14+yrs) customer and I'll recommend this shop to anyone who is in need of an honest shop. BTW, word of mouth is how I located this one. One thing I like about my shop is, I can watch the tech while he works on my van. Then I can see firsthand how to do the repair and learn the why's and how-comes? too.

My wife's EGR valve went on her '01 Protege at 2,000 km over her base 3/80k warranty.  They would not cover it.  The valve is a component of the emissions system and they would not cover it under the emissions warranty.  If you look in the owner's manual, the EGR valve is covered for only 24 months of warranty coverage.  Weird when the whole car has 36 months of base coverage.

You should contact Mazda Canada and ask for assistance on the EGR valve.

Cosmo

We are talking here about brand new cars
Take mine for example
5 times at Mazda and still the same issue
Paying the bills ?
I am paying the bills too
I ve been working in auto industry (Eng) for 5 years now. My product goes inside the seat. It has to pass severe testing (cold, ambient and warm) and still perform at 100 % level in order to be installed in the car
now, shifting from 1st to 2nd, complain about that 5 times and still have the same issue
Winning and complaining?
For sure my friend
30K with interest is tons of money for me
And I want the best for it
Right now, I am not getting it

On my way home in Oshawa last night spotted another 3 on the side of the road... this time on the right lane of a 70km/h zone with the tow truck just lifting the car up as I stopped to ask. Curious me just had to know what type of transmission issue it was, since there was no doubt in my mind it was!

Was a bright red 3 Sport, but with some graphics and driven by another young guy - probably drives it harder, but no matter. The guy was on the phone, so I asked the tow truck operator who said the shifter cable snapped.

Interesting. Don't know what's worse in the Mazdas now - autos or manuals. They're both failing, on both the 2.0 and 2.3L's.
AQUAMAN64 also posts on BDFD.com!

Hey guys.  The car looks great, but the BIG OVAL influence is going to be your worst nightmare- wait till your warranty expires!

I bought my Mazda 3 in august of 2004.
the 2.3 litre GT. has anyone else had problems with dirt and debris in their pulley system?
It was making frightening metal-sounding noises and apparently it was just dirt in the Belt system
