I just bought a 1996 Ford Escort station wagon for $2300 with 173K kms. Previous owner changed head gasket and timing belt. I need to have a reliable and inexpensive car for at least another two years. Grateful for your thoughts/comments.

I am a bit apprehensive about it since it's the first "American" car that I have bought. Previously owned Toyota (Carolla) and Nissan Sentra. Was always advised that Japanese imports are more reliable used cars.

If I recall correctly, this car is partly a Mazda 323 under the skin, good engines I'm told.
So it's not completly American!

Hello guys, so far my Escort has held up well. Did several trips from Ottawa to Totonto but I notice my speedometer dancing like crazy once I pass 100 any comments?

Possibly the cable is starting to go from the tranny to the head in the dash. They start to fray after a while and will bounce around on you.
