After another 200km of driving the Malibu this weekend, I maintain my initial impression that the suspension tends to clunk and thump over bumps, but can clarify that it is mainly only harsh bumps that do so. Road noise is low otherwise, and out on the highway the Malibu is extremely easy to drive and very smooth, and wind noise is next to nil.
Now, what really blew me away about the Malibu was its gas mileage: I managed an extremely impressive 7.9L/100km over the course of the week, and according to the on-board computer I could easily achieve a range of 800km on one tank of fuel and perhaps as much as 900km if I had been driving with a view to achieving excellent economy.
It seems lately every car I test is improving in terms of fuel efficiency — 7.9L/100km in real world 60/40 highway/city driving is fantastic for a vehicle of this size.
