After taking a beating in the media when it was introduced in late 2011 (including from the influential Consumer Reports magazine), the redesigned 2012 Civic defied critics by emerging as Canada’s bestselling car at the end of the 2012. Still, when the negative reviews started pouring in, Honda executives must have been worried that sales of their cherished bestseller would take a nose-dive; how else to explain the extraordinarily hurried exterior and interior upgrades less than a year after the redesign? Not only that, the 2013 Civic receives suspension, steering, and braking upgrades that improve the ride quality, handling, steering responsiveness, braking performance and interior quietness.

You can bet somebody was working overtime!

As we reported in our First Drive, the 2013 Civic sedan’s refreshed styling gives it a more substantial, upscale appearance that addresses complaints that the 2012 model was too bland. The Civic sedan’s front end features a new black mesh honeycomb grille with bright chrome trim and a wider, lower black grille with integral fog lights in top-trim models. At the rear, new horizontal L-shaped tail lights are connected by a horizontal chrome strip while a lower diffuser panel in the bumper infers performance potential. And the new wheel cover designs and alloys are sportier. Still, the best we can say about the 2013 Civic sedan is that it looks better than the previous model – but there’s nothing to get too excited about.

Inside, the instrument panel receives an all-black colour scheme with soft-touch plastic on the passenger side dash and upper doors, and additional chrome trim highlights around the air vents, climate control and shifter gate. Optional black cloth seats as well as black leather upholstery are now available. A centre 5-inch colour touch-screen for audio, telephone and optional navigation functions is standard on LX, EX, and Touring trims, heated front seats are now available in the LX with cloth seats, and automatic climate control is standard in EX and Touring trims. For the driver and passengers, the upscale interior creates the feeling that you’re riding in a higher class of car. Notwithstanding its excellent fuel economy, the Civic is becoming increasingly distant from its ‘economy’ car roots.
