2013 Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang has undergone more changes in the past four years than RIM’s stock evaluation. In 2010 the entire line received updated styling. Then, in 2011 new powertrains and transmissions arrived to the market, followed by the track-ready Boss 302 in 2012. Now, in 2013, the styling has once again been updated and the top-dog Shelby Mustang GT500 has gone from incredible to ludicrous with the addition of a 662-hp supercharged V8.
We have already covered a good portion of the 2013 Mustang variants in these pages from the V6 to the Boss 302 to the Shelby GT500. All of these vehicles have something in common; a fixed roof. The one edition we have yet to cover is the 2013 Mustang Convertible; until now. The vehicle I have for evaluation is a 2013 Ford Mustang V6 Premium Convertible. For 2013, all V6 Mustang Convertibles arrive as Premium editions and cannot be had with the Track Package available on the V6 Coupes. Ford must think that those purchasing V6 Mustang convertibles are more concerned with top down fun-in-the-sun cruising then track-day time attacks. I think Ford’s assumptions are correct and would also wager the majority of V6 Mustang Convertibles will come equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission and not the 6-speed manual found in my test vehicle.
The V6 Convertible is the boulevard cruiser of the Mustang family. This is the version that is all about style and comfort rather than performance. Do not expect this Mustang to throw you back in your seat with authoritative thrust. Sure this ‘Stang has the same 3.7L V6 producing 305 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, but when coupled to the six-speed manual transmission, a tall 2.73 final drive ratio, and a curb weight in excess of 1,627 kg, it feels sluggish. Instead of the “wow this car has 305 hp” sensation felt in the track-pack equipped Coupe with its 3.31 final gear ratio, the Convertible felt more like “wow, this car only has 305 hp.” To demonstrate how tall the gearing is, at 100 km/h the engine is loping along at 1,500 rpm and by 120 km/h, the tachometer has only risen to 1,750 rpm. Trying to break the rear tires loose from a dead stop is a transmission killing process.
