The performance hallmarks of the 2009 ES 350 don’t have much to do with the kind of numbers other Lexus models boast, such as zero-to-100 km/h time, but rather with creature comforts and understated elegance. Notes Lexus Canada’s managing director Tony Waring, “Canadians looking for signature styling, refined interiors, effortless handling and a luxurious, serene ride will love the ES 350’s elegance.” That serene ride reference is bang on.

With absolutely none of the “float” so often associated with big sedans — thank you, MacPherson gas struts — the ride and feel of the ES 350 is the epitome of smooth. That’s due in large part to an extremely well-engineered suspension system, and also the Super ECT, or Super Electronically Controlled Transmission, a bit of high-tech wizardry that makes shifts feel almost imperceptible.
Speaking of well-engineered, the cabin construction and insulation provides such a quiet in-cabin experience that I had to look down at the tach a couple of times, thinking the engine had cut out at a red light.
As mentioned, acceleration is decent, though the larger size of this sedan puts a bit of a muzzle on the 272 ponies. What you might be missing underfoot you’ll be gaining at the gas pump, as the 2009 ES 350 has stellar gas mileage for a luxury sedan, with a city rating of 10.9 L/100 km, and 7.2 L/100 km on the highway.
Stopping power is solid and sure, thanks to front ventilated disc brakes and rear discs that are controlled and monitored by no fewer than three on-board computer programs: ABS, Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Force Distribution. Likewise, steering is precise and sure, and also has a computer chip processing the driver’s inputs, called Progressive Rate Power Steering.
If you’re in the market for a luxury sedan, you’ll be struck by the dizzying number of choices in Canadian showrooms in 2009, but few if any offer so much for so little.
The 2009 ES 350 might not turn heads like some of its German and even American competition do, but for those happy to fly under the radar, it’s a luxury sedan like no other.
