I got home on Monday evening after work and there was a Jetta in my driveway and the Ridgeline was gone. The first thing that popped into my head when I pulled in the driveway was… it’s brown? Yeah, it is brown. Why oh why is it brown? I guess beige just wasn’t boring enough for a car that is ridiculously plain looking.

But a peek inside revealed that the interior was leather and beige — hey there it is (the beige, that is). So I wasn’t excited in the very least and as I’m asked every week: “What are you driving?” I mumbled — Jetta.

But hey, sometimes first impressions are wrong, and after I jumped in for a quick spin around the block to get a feel for the car and take some photos my attitude began to change. My second impression was more positive as it was noticeable even on that quick drive that this chassis is tight and the engine feels smooth.

My tester is a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8TSI Highline. Yes, once again it is a top of the line model but it is priced reasonably well for the equipment and packaging you get at under $30,000. The optional technology package includes a Fender premium audio system, navigation and rear-view camera and could easily be skipped to save $1,570 if you were a little tight on budget — or save a bunch more and get a Comfortline.

The drivetrain really is the story of this vehicle from Volkswagen. The Jetta has been stripped down to become more price-competitive but the 1.8-litre TSI engine and the six-speed automatic transmission are what make the Jetta an interesting proposal.
