From the inventors of the ‘SAV’ comes the BMW X5 this week. No, that is not a typo, BMW has always called the X5 an SAV (as well as the rest of their SUVs and crossovers). Call it what you will, if you like luxury SUVs with a lot of power, this BMW X5 may be on your shopping list this spring. With a base price of $76,500 the X5 xDrive50i I’m driving delivers a solid first impression.

It might be the $20,000 in options that help its cause but I doubt it, because the heart of this beast is the 4.4L TwinPower V8 engine that produces a whopping 445 hp and a neck-snapping 479 lb-ft of torque – yup, again that is no typo.

Neither is the $20,000 in options remark. The packages are listed below, but the most notable is probably the $4,900 standalone Bang and Olufsen stereo system – that’s a lot of coin for a stereo in a vehicle to replace an already-not-too-shabby system to begin with. But hey, I’m sure it’s only like $100 a month or something, so why not have the best of the best?

The rest of the options are very similar to those that were on the 435i I drove last week. Except this week the M Sport Line package is extra (I checked) and the $4,400 Premium package seems like a nice package with the upgraded Harman/Kardon stereo… but to rip it out for the Bang and Olufsen makes the package seem pointless – unless you really like rear heated seats.

Maybe I’m getting grumpy in my old age or cheaper by the minute but over a hundred large after taxes seems like a lot of money for this vehicle – maybe I’ll change my mind by week’s end.
