Another week and another snow storm in Ottawa – what happened to global warming again? This week another diesel vehicle as well – the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI. This is a 3.0L V6 diesel powerplant that puts out 240 hp and a rather stout 406 lb-ft of torque – what’s not to love here?

The resemblance to the Porsche Cayenne is uncanny – they do share some components; although Porsche may deny it, the body is near identical from some angles. Oddly I used to think this was a large SUV but realize now that it is simply a mid-size offering with nearly full-size capabilities.

My tester is a Highline model, which is mid-level trim, but adding the TDI engine and R-line package with its 20-inch wheels and aluminum trim makes this anything but a mid-level priced vehicle. At over $66,000 the Volkswagen Touareg is not inexpensive by any means, but compared to a similarly spec’d Porsche Cayenne it’s a steal.

The Highline TDI Touareg comes pretty well loaded, leather seating, dual-zone climate control, reverse camera, eight-speed automatic transmission and HID headlights. The glass roof is fairly impressive, a full roof of glass that tilts and slides as well, giving you a great view of the sky… or the layers of ice and snow on it if you are so blessed.

You can’t ask for a much better vehicle for Ottawa in the winter. With 4Motion all-wheel drive and a clean diesel power plant it should be a fun yet economical week in a vehicle capable of pulling 3,500 kg.
