Christmas may be over, by why give up the Christmas themed cars? Another red car this week in the form of a 2014 Mazda CX-5 GT with all-wheel drive – this is the new 2.5L four-cylinder engine that replaces the previously exclusive 2.0L that delivered excellent fuel economy but was universally slammed for having zero get-up-and-go.

My tester, like most of the cars that I receive, is a fully loaded model: leather seating, technology package, moonroof, all-wheel drive and more. It certainly makes a great first impression when you step inside with the light tan leather interior offsetting that gorgeous red exterior.

The big upgrade here over last year’s GT is the 2.5L engine, now producing 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque compared to the outgoing 2.0 that barely gets the CX-5 moving with its 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque (which is still available in GX trim). The smaller engine does work okay in the front-wheel-drive CX-5, but once you add the weight and drivetrain loss of the all-wheel-drive system it really is lacking.

Considering the CX-5 is loaded, its as-tested price of $37,340 after freight and PDI seems like a reasonable amount to me. What you get is all-wheel drive, the aforementioned 2.5L engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, keyless entry with push-button start, 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights with adaptive lighting, power glass moonroof and more.

Turns out this is the same vehicle that recently won our huge Autos.ca compact SUV shootout so will I agree with the big wigs and the consensus choice of our comparison team in the GTA?
