Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Subaru’s rally machine for the road – the 2013 Subaru WRX STI! Yes the wing on the back of this thing might have you mistake this week’s tester for a bird, and the sound of it going by a plane (maybe?). Anyhow, this week I get to try out Subaru’s most potent offering: the WRX STI.

Subaru just recently announced a new Tsurugi Edition for Canada that tones down the boy-racer looks by removing the park bench on the rear and offering different wheels, but our tester here is the “base” 4-door STI with a one-car-fits-all mantra (that means no options, folks!). The hatchback 5-door can be had with a Sport-tech package.

Unfortunately pricing is still on the high side for this vehicle at over $43,000 for my test model. The base STI does start at a reasonable $38,000 but you get very few features and content for a vehicle in that price range.

Looking at Subaru’s website it seems that the colour of my tester is no longer available for 2014 in Canada (perhaps that’s an omission on their site), too bad because it is a nice colour, although most STI’s I see are white, silver or World Rally blue!

What comes standard with an STI? A six-speed manual transmission (no auto is available), a 2.5L boxer (horizontally opposed) four-cylinder engine with a turbocharger outputting 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque and Alcantara-lined sport seat. A few more features such as navigation, climate control and power windows are standard, but the STI is pretty spartan when comes to any kind of niceties that is for sure… but will I care, stay tuned to find out.

MSRP as tested (including destination): $43,477
