A Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet – the perfect vehicle for Ottawa mid-February… oh wait, it only feels like February; it’s actually only December! Nevertheless this week I’m faced with the challenge of making the most of my test vehicle. Unfortunately I can’t drop the top at this temperature or risk cracking it – and dying of hypothermia.

With all-wheel drive and four very large winter tires (20-inch), I should have some fun at the very least. Perhaps, oddly, driving a Porsche on the streets in winter can be more fun because you can reach its limits at very low speeds, allowing for a little sideways action.

This beautiful car comes painted in no-charge Guards Red – look at me driving a red convertible in the winter – everyone seriously thinks I’m a nutbar. But despite the no-charge paint, there are still a lot of high-cost features that bring the base $117,400 price tag up over $136,000.

The biggest option is the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission. This is Porsche’s seven-speed, dual-clutch, automated-manual transmission. This one comes with steering wheel mounted buttons (not paddles) as well as Sport and Sport Plus settings for quicker and more aggressive shifting.

It also comes standard with a 3.4L horizontally opposed, six-cylinder engine that outputs 350 hp and 288 lb-ft of torque – perfect for fun in the sun… err, snow.
