Sometimes I feel spoiled, and this week is one of those times. This week I am behind the wheel of the 2013 BMW X1 xDrive35i — quite a mouthful of a name, and BMW’s newest offering in the X1 series, which was previously only available as an xDrive28i.

The xDrive28i is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the xDrive35i is a 3.0L inline six-cylinder unit that is also stuffed with further air using a turbocharger for a neck-snapping 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.

The BMW X1 xDrive35i starts at just under $40,000 — but the X1 is a very small crossover, or what BMW likes to call a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). It is the size of a 3 Series and actually is shorter than their 3 Series Touring model. But it does cater to those looking for a sporty small crossover, although I’d personally suggest one just get the 3 Series Touring — but BMW knows what they are doing as I see far more X1s on the road than new Touring models.

My tester is equipped with a lot of the desirable features like park assist, a massive panoramic moonroof, leather seating, heated seats, dual-zone climate control and navigation.

All this for over $50,000… a little steep, but it does carry the BMW cachet.

MSRP as tested (including destination): $ 53,150
