Could a five-passenger Volt debut in Detroit?

There are indications Chevrolet is again considering bringing a five-passenger crossover vehicle powered by the Voltec drivetrain to market in the near future, according to a report from Fox News.

The latest evidence of a CUV Volt is the registration of the ‘Crossvolt’ trademark in the US. The nameplate, in the trademark category ‘Automobiles’, was filed on August 19, 2014 and published for opposition on December 23.

This is the second time GM has filed for a trademark on the name as the first registration expired in November of this year.

A crossover-type vehicle was seen testing with other Chevrolet Volts earlier this year before the electric sedan’s debut next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, hinting the crossover model could debut at the same time.

Chevrolet showed off an electric crossover in 2010, called the Volt MPV5 (pictured), using the same powertrain as the first generation Chevrolet Volt.
