Toyota sees new entries from General Motors as a good thing

Toyota is lining up a new Tacoma mid-size truck for the North American International Auto Show next month and the Japanese automaker sees GM’s re-entry into the segment as a good thing.

Speaking with Automotive News, general manager of Toyota stated plainly, “It has been a flat segment” and “with the new entries coming in, the market should expand.”

The new Tacoma is expected to arrive with some powertrain upgrades to improve fuel economy and could introduce a new six-speed automatic transmission.

In Canada, the Tacoma accounts for 63 percent of the sub-full-size pickup market (which includes the Nissan Frontier, Honda Ridgeline, as well as the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon).
