Update (January 14, 2015) – The 2015 Mini John Cooper Works showed up in Detroit on Monday clad in “Rebel Green” paint. The US-market base price was also revealed: $30,600. No word yet on Canadian availability and pricing, but we’ll update this story with the details when they become available.
BMW’s pocket rocket is faster, more powerful
The new Mini John Cooper Works will be revealed right on schedule at the North American International Auto Show next month in Detroit. Sporting a new, up-tuned version of the Mini TwinPower Turbo 2.0L four-cylinder, the John Cooper Works looks to waste front tires over and over again.
While the last generation Mini JCW was probably one of the best handling front-wheel drive cars you could buy, the new model makes sure you can take it to the track and keep up with the big boys. The new TwinPower engine delivers 228 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. That torque figure peaks at 1,250 rpm all the way up to 4,800 rpm. Peak horsepower then takes over at 5,200 rpm as it continues to 6,000 rpm.
With this new engine, the Mini JCW can make the sprint to 60 mph (96.5 km/h) in 5.9 seconds with the six-speed Steptronic automatic. If you’d rather row your own gears (because it’s a JCW, why wouldn’t you?) the sprint time increases to 6.1 seconds with the six-speed manual onto a top speed of 153 mph (246 km/h). Also, there’s no jerky shifts as the latest model will be fitted with “engine speed adaptation”, a fancy Anglo-German phrase for rev-matching.
A sport suspension will be offered as standard equipment on the JCW. However, if you want all that engine performance without the rock-hard go-kart style ride, you can have it swapped out for a normal, more comfortable suspension as a no-charge option. Bringing everything to a stop is a set of Brembo brakes.
On top of the obvious mechanical improvements, the new JCW sits on the same updated platform as its 3- and 5-door siblings as well as the future BMW 1-Series. While a convertible was not announced, we expect to see one in the future, just like the last generation Mini JCW.
